I can't wait to see these ads on tv.  hahaha

"Carbon dioxide... we call it life," TV ads say

A little girl blows away dandelion fluff as an announcer says, "Carbon dioxide: they call it pollution; we call it life," in an advertisement targeting global warming "alarmists," especially     Al Gore.

The television ads, screened for the press on Wednesday and set to air in 14 U.S. cities starting on Thursday, are part of a campaign by the conservative Competitive Enterprise Institute to counter a media spotlight on threats posed by worldwide climate change.

The spots are timed to precede next week's theatrical release of "An Inconvenient Truth," a documentary film on global warming that features Gore, the former vice president and Democratic presidential candidate.

Against backdrops of a park, a beach and a forest, one celebrates the benefits of greenhouse gas-producing fuels.

Ok, I can't really understand what they're trying to do exactly. Sure, I think the global warming thing has been overblown by the media, but, uhm, what are they doing to alleviate this exactly?

It seems to me that the ad is fighting knowledge with ignorance. Yes, plants need CO2 to live. But that doesn't mean that too much CO2 in the atmosphere won't lead to global warming.

I can't even figure out what they're trying to say.  Are they asserting that life is not possible without CO2 emissions from cars, factories, etc., or what?

I dunno. I do know that our atmosphere does need greenhouse gasses to keep in the heat(we'd freeze otherwise), but I agree - what is it are they trying to say?

They appear to be attempting a strawman argument.

Scientists: Carbon dioxide emissions may cause worldwide temperatures to rise.

Politicians: Let's regulate CO2 emissions.

These guys: The politicians are trying to send us back to the middle ages!

It might be another straw man argument, where they're claiming that their opponents want all CO2 eliminated, which would cause some problems. The thing is, that would be basically impossible.

That's why I can't wait to see the commercials.  Smiley  Of course, it is going up against another strawman ad, that being Gore's movie.  Maybe they are just trying to make the whole issue seem stupid and save everyone's braincells by driving them away from the theatres.

Life wouldn't be possible without CO2.  CO2 is life.  Plants require it.

Sure.

Also, the sky is blue.

Plants are green.

The sun is a star.

Saying facts is fun.

I still don't see what their point is.

So what are they arguing, that because CO2 is necessary for life, it doesn't matter how much we have in our atmosphere?

I wonder if next they'll argue that because vitamin A is good for you, it doesn't matter how much you ingest.

I agree

If we need to pollute the atmosphere to maintain the necessary CO2 levels, then exactly how did plants get along before human civilization?

Beer is a cool, pleasant drink.  Evidently, that means that drinking 12 beers in an hour is great, too.

What a stupid ad.

CO2 is great, if you are a plant.

If the number of trees worldwide was increasing at the same rate as CO2 emissions, we'd be in fine shape. Unfortunately it is more of an inverse relationship.

Is anyone dumb enough to think that environmentalists would somehow remove enough CO2 that it would start having major negative effects?

A warmer wetter and more flooded earth is good for life in general since it means there's less areas that are in harsh continental interiors which reduces deserts. so the ad is right.. just not in the original way.

How would salty ocean water help deserts...

The more wet the earth is the more rainy it is so rain means deserts retreat.

It's unclear that it would be more rainy. Of course all of those major hurricanes might help.

Oh please, do you really think that buy the time there is enough rain to change anything it'll matter?  The east coast will have flooded before deserts start retreating.

When you consider that the earth has endured much more CO2 than exists today is a testament that the debate is blown out of proportion.  Yeah we can aim for a more green lifestyle, but the world is not going to burn or flood out to an end where it is no longer able to sustain life like the eco-terrorists and their supporters want to make it seem.

First, calling people who want emissions reduced "eco-terrorists" seems rather extreme.

Second, this does not address the point behind the post at hand.  Whether or not increased CO2 emissions are bad, it is still true that it is an utter, unabashed red herring to point out that CO2 is necessary for life and then act as if it has any relevance whatsoever to the question of regulating emissions.
