I was asked this the other day and i have no idea how this race would play out. Would both candidates struggle to get 80% of their base out to vote for them?

States like Missouri, Florida and Arkansas would surely be in play. Would Virginia vote democrat?

McCain would win that race, but it has nothing to do with Warner. In 2000, Gore selected Lieberman as his VP. The next day, his numbers dropped by 2 points. In the end 6,000,000 registered Democrats voted for Bush - a lot of them giving the same reason. Distaste for LIEberman.

I would happily vote for Warner, although I hoped he'd have better sense than to pick Lieberman as his VP.

This election would be a clear and comfortable win for McCain/Romney.  Lieberman really brings nothing new or interesting to the Democratic ticket.  Lieberman is dull and old hat.

McCain's experience, particularily in the foreign policy field, would trump anything Warner brings to the race.  The south would not turn Democrat because Warner is the candidate.  Virginia would likely go Democrat, and  possibly Arkansas and West Virginia as well.

McCain would keep the Republican base intact by in large, and would have a great appeal to independents.  Romney would be seen as competent and able, and as someone who could very capably assume the office of President if required, much more so than would Lieberman.

John McCain/Mitt Romney                322
Mark Warner/Joe Lieberman            216

Well, Lieberman has issues, but being a liar isn't one of them

Agreed. This talk of Republican fatigue and a "fed up" public reminds me a lot of the last election.
