Do you think the Republicans will ever run a Presidential Candidate from New England?  Seems unlikely to me...

I don't think the GOP will nominate Mitt Romney any time, so I say not in the next 30 years.

Most northern republicans are too moderate to win the nomination.

Bush I was really a Northeasterner, he was no more a Texan than Hillary is a New Yorker.

Good point, Better Red, and wasn't W. born in Connecticut or something?

There must be an interesting history of politicians moving or changing their home state for political advantage.

Like Nixon...didn't he at some point switch from California to New York?

If a northerner were conservative enough to win the primary, sure, why not?  I think any Republican would win the South, regardless of where he was from.

Lincoln didn't move to Illinois until he was 21.  Bush wasn't much older than that when he moved to Texas.

The Democrats nominate Southerners, there are Republicans in New England, so why not?

I don't see why not either.
BTW, the last Southerner to be the GOP candidate was Lincoln! Grin

Depends what criteria you use.  Lincoln was born in Kentucky, but his home state was Illinois.

Is that really 'northern'?

Plus, there is no way in hell Hagel would be nominated.

It's either that or they've *never* nominated one...

The only northeastern (if that's what you mean by northern) Republican who I can see winning a GOP primary is Rick Santorum, and he'd get slaughtered in the general.

Given a somewhat charismatic, moderate Democrat, he'd lose PAas well.

I think he would lose PA to Kerry.

I think this was written back when Romney was more liberal. Didn't he change in late 04/early 05?

Not impossible, after their 10th loss with a southern or western conservative.

A Republican from the northeast being nominated would be great, as would one from the west (excluding Idaho, Utah - Huntsmen). These politicians tend to be moderate/liberal on social issues and actually care about issues such as balancing the budget (instead of just pretending which, let's face, many politicians do "just pretend"). They could give the President a run for his money in 2012 even if the economy starts to recover. That said, they would have a hard time winning the nomination, and few if any are nationally known at this point.

Dubya was born in Connecticut, but moved to Texas when he was 2.  He's very much a Southerner.

Yes, which is why I advocated him on the first page.

At least I know better now . . .
