I think he would make a perfect independent candidate or running mate to someone like Lou Dobbs. He is one of the verry few democrats I am found of.

He's to conservative to win in the democratic primary, thats why he should run as an independent. What is really screwed up is that the primaries are decided by extremist in each party, so the majority in the centre is left out. I encourage all independents and moderates to vote in the primaries. For example candidates like Warner or Guliani could win by a lanslide in the runoff, but the primary nomination will probably go to someone like Clinton, or Gore, or Allen, or Frist.

Option 2. Nelson would be an excellent President, but as a third party candidate, he'd be a spoiler.

Depends, if he got the Dem nomination and the Republican was bad I'd vote for him.

He'd never run for president.  And he certainly can't win the Democratic nomination.

It depends. Being a somewhat conservative Democrat, I can usually rely on him to vote the way I would if I were in the Senate and when neither of my Senators share my thoughts (which happens quite a bit). However, I don't think he would win the nomination. If he did win the nomination, it would depend on how liberal his GOP opponent was. If he was against, say, Chafee, I'd probably vote GOP.

As a conservative leaning democrats, which side would he act as a spoiler? I think he could appeal to both sides.

True, but I still think he'd take more votes from the Democratic side. He's conservative for a Democrat but still closer to the Dems than to the GOP overall.

If the Democrats nominate Nelson...I will have lost all faith in them. The party is constantly trying to push their founding principles to the right to appeal to the pro-war voters and social conservatives. Nelson would be the icing on the cake for me...my avatar would quickly turn blue.

As noted earlier, he'd never run and if he did, he'd never win the nomination but I'll play along. Nelson is my favorite Democratic Senator and I'd definetley consider voting for him but it depends on who he runs against. If it was Nelson vs. someone like Giuliani (while he's a political hero of mine I wouldn't want to see him as President) then I'd vote for Nelson.
