What are your opinions about DeVos' statement about not flying flags @ 1/2-mast when a MI soldier dies b/c it violates flag code?  What do you think about him going back on this statement?

I think they should be flown at half-mast.

The statement doesn't make him look good, although it's not really a big issue in the campaign.

Things like this should not matter.

I hadn't heard this yet.   I feel that there are bigger fish to fry, but feel that this could be a big deal.  Face it, most policy goes above the heads of most people, and to not lower the flags for our fallen servicemen and women is something that everyone can relate to.  If this gets around, he just lost a lot of votes from people who understand little about anything else.

In 2000, I had a family member ask if Gore was the Republican or the Democrat the week before the election.  Never underestimate the dim knowledge of the electorate.

I have another family member voted for Bush in 2004 because he said that Kerry had skipped out on service by joining the Texas Air National Guard and missed his physical.  I'm not kidding.

I agree with you here--the politically "blonde" people who don't care about much else will be affected by this (and Amway Man--but I already started a topic about that).  I will try to get a Free Press (Detroit) story article for you.

One of my pet peeves is Governors ordering the lowering of the US flag...

He's correct.

Of course, the Governor should be allowed to lower the state flag to half mast, certainly not the national flag.

These are phylosophical thoughts.  This is fine, but the bottom line is that 99.9999999% of people will just plain think it is terrible to say that the flags should not be lowered to half mast for our fallen soldiers- period.  Mr. DeVos will likely pay the price of many votes for this. Simple issues like this are something that the average person understands.

I have to agree with you.  People will just not like it.  He did go back on his statement, and it kinda died down in the media.  I don't know what kind of media recognition it's gotten around the rest of the state.  Here in Wayne Co. it got a lot b/c Oakland Co. Exec. L. Brooks Patterson backed DeVos up, so it got a little more media attention.
