News.at has polled Austrians what they think about George Bush before he visits Austria next week.

The summary:

* 72% dislike him or have a very unfavorable view of him. Nearly the same number see him as a threat to world peace.

* 82% want our Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel to question him about Iran, Irak, the CIA flights through Europe, ...

* 79% want Hillary Clinton in the White House instead of George Bush.

Here´s the article (for those who can german):

P.S.: As far as I know massive protests are planned in Vienna the day he arrives.

This is higher than I'd expect the same figure to be in Germany.

There´s another poll out in Austria before the Bush visit next week about what Austrians think about the US. It´s part of the Euro-Barometer-Survey, which is conducted in all European Union countries and has a sample of 1000 persons in each country.

A brief summary:

* 14% of Austrians think that the US has a positive impact on World Peace.
* 62% think that the US is disrupting World Peace.
* 29% support the US-War on Terror.
* 49% think the US encourages Terror.

Since the last survey done in 2003, the US-Image went down dramatically. There was only 1 improvement: in the economic sector.
Another key finding: The in Austria very unpopular EU (only 32% now support our EU membership compared to 67% when we entered the EU in 1995) has become more popular then the US in all surveyed categories incl. peace policy, world economy, environmental protection and the fight against poverty.

For those who are intereted in the article, here it is:

Perhaps someday Europeans will get the hint that we don't give a flying R-AT's ass what they think.

I don't think it would be much different either, unfortunately. I'm not a German though, btw, just stuck here at the moment

Come on Don, surely you don't think that people who've been forcing themselves on the rest of the world since the crusades are seriously going to stop telling non-Europeans what they should think and do.

Lol, good point - but hand on heart, is the US all that different? Ethnocentrism is a disease which afflicts all (or most) of the Western world, which is why I find all this trans-Atlantic bickering totally foolhardy and unnecessary. Ask many people in the Third World and they'll equate Europe with North America and vice versa.

Still, I never cease to find this ironic. Culturally and socially, America is basically an extension (or, you could say, a revision) of Europe, yet some Americans show nothing but outright contempt for that part of the world. I find that strangely Oedipal.

Breaking-News-Update: There were 4 bomb alarms in Vienna in the last 4 hours, but they were fakes. There´s tight security there and a tense and nervous atmosphere. Arrival of Bush in 9 hours.

The Austrians fought on the good side in the crusades though. Remember? They took that French mass murderer Richard Lionheart hostage and put him in their version of Gitmo?
