Recognition of the Armenian Genocide Resolution

1. The government of Atlasia recognizes the forced evacuation and resultant deaths of over a million Armenians as ordered by the government of the Young Turks from 1915 to 1917 to be genocide.
2. The government of Atlasia hereby condemns the government of Turkey for refusing to acknowledge the said events as genocide.

I support such a resolution. There are no economic sanctions of diplomatic restraints imposed through this resolution. What it is proposing is a harsh condemnation on present-day Turkey's blatant refusal to acknowledge a shameful period in it's past.

Instead of:

2. The government of Atlasia hereby condemns the government of Turkey for refusing to acknowledge the said events as genocide.

I think you should make it less harsh and more exact so to not upset the government of Turkey.  What about something like this:

2. The government of Atlasia hereby condemns the refusal to acknowledge the said events as genocide by the government of Turkey.

This way we are not condemning the government of Turkey, but instead only their actions in this particular matter.

I agree.  Turkey is a close and important ally.

I have an amendment then:

Clause 2 is hereby re-written to read:

2. The government of Atlasia hereby condemns the refusal to acknowledge the said events as genocide by the government of Turkey.

I don't think that the government should be in the business of deciding what is a genocide and what isn't. If the Armenian atrocities constituted genocide, then they constituted genocide--there is no need for the government to place its official stamp of approval on using this label. I would rather allow the people to decide for themselves what is or is not a genocide, instead of having the government tell them.

This is a resolution.  It does not make recognition of the Armenian Genocide official Atlasian statute.  It is also a move taken by Canada and many countries in Europe; the purpose is to put pressure on Turkey so that it will acknowledge the atrocities it committed against the Armenian people.

A resolution is still an official act of the Senate.
