While I support this bill, as I said during the discussion of the Bahrain bill- how many more single state free-trade bills will be introduced?

May I also add that Oman was not mentioned on the list of single state free-trade bills that was set out in response to that original question. Why one Middle East Bill that included and excluded certain nations was not introduced as opposed to all these individual bills is beyond me.

Look in the legislation introduction thread to see. And who cares if they all come at once, it's fine that way, there's nothing wrong. Besides Hawk's the one who got Jordan split off from Israel. If that wasn't we wouldn't have another bill in the line.

I sincerely hope this gets stalled (I know it won't) until Friday.  I believe after all that we've done having free trade with a country like Oman is slapping humanity in the face.  Even considering allowing free trade in such a place that has such disdain for human beings is a moral offense.  We have enough free trade to lower consumer prices, adding Oman is simply wrong.  I truly hope that the Senate will finally reject a free trade bill.

Not that it will appease you, but this Bill will be subject to same amendment as I proposed for Morocco, Singapore and Bahrain. And I envision that one day, the political liberalisation we seek to both promote and encourage will see standards of living rise abroad, as opposed to diminishing at home, as a consequence of such liberalisation permitting labor union recognition and activity that will seek to raise such standards

One Middle East Free Trade Bill would have sufficed - of course, countries such as Iran, Syria and Yemen would absolutely have no part of such agreement

As for our Middle Eastern "allies", they'd be subject to my amendment. The Islamic word, by and large, has an appalling human rights track record but because they are "allies" then free trade is something we should offer them but not without my amendment. This is why I proposed to take Jordan out of the original Atlasian-Israel-Jordan Free Trade Bill

Well, you know what's coming Wink. I, hereby, introduce the following amendment:

3. This Agreement requires a commitment on the part of Oman to make progress towards becoming a fully functioning liberal democracy, with respect for political freedoms and civil rights. This will be monitored by the Secretary of State in accordance with the terms of the Foreign Policy Review Act. Should he determine that Oman is regressing on its commitment, and then he shall either (depending on the severity of the regress):

a. Request that the Senate introduce an appropriate tariff either on:

i. Selected Omani goods
ii. All Omani goods

b. Request that the Senate revoke the Agreement with Bahrain in its entirety

While I wish to participate in a more fulfilling debate, all I can say on this is, as I have before: "Free Trade". I rest my case.

An oversight on my part, I withdraw the previous amendment and introduce this one:
