Redux:

Leadership candidates
Gordon Brown
Michael Meacher or John McDonnell - TBA Monday?

And it's McDonnell. Looks like he'll get onto the ballot as well.

Apparently Prescott is going to endorse Johnson for Deputy. And Benn is unlikely to get onto the ballot (throwing the contest open as he's the most popular candidate amongst Labour members).

And it's McDonnell. Looks like he'll get onto the ballot as well.

Or not. He still needs 18 signatures.

As for deputy, all are on the ballot except for Cruddas and Benn. Cruddas needs just one more signature, Benn needs 15. Nominations close Thursday.

I hope they choose McDonnell, but I'm sure Brown would be a significant improvement over right-wing Bush lapdog Blair as well.

Deputy Leader Map:

Colours are semi-random. Mistakes may have been made. This map will be completed on Thursday.
Still, some of the patterns are interesting. Seems as though it's mostly big names and the Hard Left that haven't signed no one's papers. Exceptions in both cases though (Prescott, Cohen etc).

Al

The map is great.

Could you do it with different colours for each candidate though (Blue, Yellow , Green) etc?

He has now.

Hilary Benn is up to 42 and Cruddas is past the line too. So far 320 MPs have nominated for deputy leader, leaving just 34 to nominate a candidate. Hopefully Benn gets there.

The list of those who've not nominated in the Leadership election is:

Charles Clarke
Andrew Dismore
Jim Dowd
Frank Field
Dai Havard
Kate Hoey
Piara Khabra
Peter Kilfoyle
Andrew MacKinlay
Siobhan McDonagh
Fiona Mactaggart
Alan Meale
Graham Stringer
David Winnick
Tony Wright (Cannock Chase)
Tony Wright (Gt Yarmouth)

Doesn't look good for McDonnell. At all. He needs all of them to nominate him, and the idea of (say) Mactaggart or McDonagh doing so is laughable. And Dai Havard isn't happy with the way McDonnell acted over Meacher's candidacy.

I think it is a crying shame that Labour Party members will not be getting the chance to choose their leader.

It is utterly ridiculous that we have the world and his wife standing for the deputy leadership - a position with no powers or responsibilities, but only one person going for the big prize. The people chasing around after the deputy leadership should have had the guts to go for the top spot; I think they would have found there was more support in the party than the parliamentary party and the media think. They might even have won.

Although McDonnell's politics are the polar opposite of my own, and I am repelled by his political agenda, I would have seriously considered nominating him if I were a Labour MP.

Can a centrist have a polar opposite to their own views? Wink

The funny thing is many commentators seemed to think McDonnell running would help Brown, as it would make him seem much closer to the centre in comparison.. I think Johnson should've run, he seems pretty likeable and could've won..

So, knowing Britain, there won't even be a yes/no vote? Shame about it.

I thought you'd think that Grin

Not exactly very helpful (in so far as it's reflective of his campaigning style) in getting cross-factional support though.

I think that idea was proposed, but rejected by the NEC (and I agree that that's a shame).
In practice this has been a little like leadership elections before the Bennite surge; with Brown winning 313 to 29. An odd little irony is that the tough ballot access rules (which also did for Ken Livingstone in '92) are a product of Benn's challenge to Kinnock in '88 (which also had the effect of making divisions within the Left of the party permanent).
