Reed concedes defeat Ga. Lt. Gov primary

By SHANNON McCAFFREY
Associated Press Writer

ATLANTA — Former Christian Coalition leader Ralph Reed, unable to overcome his ties to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, conceded defeat Tuesday in Georgia's Republican race for lieutenant governor.

It was a stunning turnaround for Reed, who was making his first bid for elective office after working for years as a behind-the-scenes campaign strategist and leading the Christian Coalition and the state Republican Party. He vied with state Sen. Casey Cagle for the GOP nomination in a primary race that appeared closer than expected in recent months because of Reed's work with Abramoff, who pleaded guilty to fraud and corruption earlier this year.

In attack ads and televised debates, Cagle hammered away at Reed's connections to Abramoff, and asked whether Reed could face criminal charges for accepting more than $5.3 million from two Indian tribes.

Reed did not pull out; he lost the primary today by eleven percent.

For governor, Cox trails by eight percent.

Yep, this was becoming clearer and clearer day-by-day according to the polling.  Reed's unfavorables were getting really, really high.

And Cathy Cox was going to lose.  Not surprising actually.

Oh, btw.  Here's a link to the results.

Looks like Cynthia McKinney is heading to a runoff.  That's a good sign.

That would be typical if he had pimped Ralphie for a White House run.

I laughed hysterically when I heard this, but on second thought it's not such good news for Georgia Dems. Reed would have been the perfect opponent. Sad

My "God" this is serious, people.

Reed could have had no other reason for running for Lt. Gov. of Georgia.

Now he's doneski, in terms of elected politics. But he's not exactly going to be hurting for job opportunities. The guy is, if nothing else, very good at political forecasting. He gave a talk in 1992 I saw clips of recently... it was unreal. He had like the next 4+ cycles figured out already.

reed is no doubt a strange little man.  creepy, even.

but i never thought of him as a crazy religious.  sure, he was the head of the christian coalition and talked the talk.  i never got the impression that he actually believed all of that nonsense.  he was just highly ambitious.  the christian coalition was a means to an end.

i dont think pat robertson believes all of that crap he says either.

i could be wrong.

Nah, I think you're right. About both Reed and Robertson. Frauds, in all regards.
