The traditional election night could come to an end because of new voting laws, the elections minister has said. The new laws mean election officials have to check signatures and dates of birth of postal voters - something they say cannot be done in one night.

Democracy minister Bridget Prentice said there were good arguments for delaying the counts until the next day. There was "ongoing discussion" about the idea but candidates also had strong reasons for wanting results quickly.

I would find it a bit sad if all the declerations were made at the same time. They should do as they did in the 1960's - count them until 2 or 3(?) in the morning- give the results as they stand and then resume counting in the morning.

While I always enjoy watching the declarations on BBC (or C-SPAN) I would think it is best to wait until the result is truly known no matter how long that may be. The constituency is going to have to live with the MP for a few years why should a few extra hours (to get the correct result) really matter?

Counting them throughout the night is best for me.

OH what a lovely picture that is, are you really serious tho?

I must say though, if he can find some decent solid ground on which to build a platform, I can see him beating an old stuffy Brown, though I do think he needs to cut losses and support popular Labour programs that are putting the country in good form.

Overnight of course, I love watching the race unfold

I am 99% certain Labour will loose its majority, 75% certain the Tories will be the largest party and 50% certain they will have a small, but possibly unworkable majority Smiley

If you can give me ones to work with. Of course Camerons hair may be thinner and grayer and 'Ming-thuselah' may be long gone Smiley

You Brits already have your elections too late as it is.  Closing the polls at 10pm and then counting every single ballot in the constituency at the same time is ridiculous.

I don't care as long as they start releasing ward figures.
