You'd be best off as an independent; you don't really fit into either party. You probably most resemble the GOP of say, 1952, but that isn't the same GOP as today. And you're definitely not a Democrat either, despite being more liberal on social issues than many Democrats on this board.

i really, really want to stay in the gop.  but the battle seems futile.  the righties have total control.

what bothers me most is that a lot of righties want  the people like me gone from the party.  most people like me have already left,, though.

This is kinda interesting, because right next door to Chafee's state is another incumbent senator struggling through a contentious primary against a more 'trademark' member of their party.  It's just completely the opposite way round.

Anyway, I've always thought of you as a perfect Independent, Mitty.  To be honest, I can't see many issues where you fall into the Republican 'mainstream', from what I can gather.

Well I would Rob except for two things.

PA is very dumb and has closed primaries so if I'm an independent I have no affect upon how gets the nomination in the end.

Plus I like being part of a party now only if we could finally get one that I would support more than half-heartedly.

I personally see nothing wrong with being registered as a party member for primary voting purposes, but considering yourself an independent.  I'd definitely do it.
