i made a vow to myself that if lincoln chafee loses the republican primary i will change my registration (not just an avatar change but an actual registration change) to independent.

i wish not to be associated with a party that throws its good members out.

be that as it may, i still hope chafee wins.

good, you get too much crap from people with 'why are you Republican' remarks, and personally the only place I see you fitting with the party are issues of anti-union, anti-protectionism, pro-privatising SS and pro-Iraq War.

I'm happy to be in a State where voters aren't registered into a party.

You'd be best off as an independent; you don't really fit into either party. You probably most resemble the GOP of say, 1952, but that isn't the same GOP as today. And you're definitely not a Democrat either, despite being more liberal on social issues than many Democrats on this board.

why should i if they are going to keep turning away the people i agree with most (ie lincoln chafee)

i really, really want to stay in the gop.  but the battle seems futile.  the righties have total control.

what bothers me most is that a lot of righties want  the people like me gone from the party.  most people like me have already left,, though.

This is kinda interesting, because right next door to Chafee's state is another incumbent senator struggling through a contentious primary against a more 'trademark' member of their party.  It's just completely the opposite way round.

Anyway, I've always thought of you as a perfect Independent, Mitty.  To be honest, I can't see many issues where you fall into the Republican 'mainstream', from what I can gather.

I agree.  I might switch to an indy at some point and then reregister in a party in 2008 (if there are any competitive primaries for President by the time it gets to PA).

Same here. Actually alot of Republicans on this board would probably say the same thing.

Don't leave the party Walter. I know that I've kidded you a few times about it but still the more moderates and old skool, yes with a K god damn it, that we keep in the party the more chance we have of keeping this from turning into the Christian Right party.

i would hope that many democrats in ct would not only support lieberman's indy run should he lose the primary, but also change their party registration to indy.

i guess both parties have been taken over by their radical wings.

That happened around 1980, Colin.

(For the record, I think you'd make a great independent Wink)

That green avatar is calling your name...

Poor Chafee. He should have switched parties years ago.

Well I would Rob except for two things.

PA is very dumb and has closed primaries so if I'm an independent I have no affect upon how gets the nomination in the end.

Plus I like being part of a party now only if we could finally get one that I would support more than half-heartedly.

I personally see nothing wrong with being registered as a party member for primary voting purposes, but considering yourself an independent.  I'd definitely do it.

You're welcome to join the moderate (formally known as "Democratic") party if the far right (formally known as "Republican") party disgusts you too much.  All of yall are.
