Almost makes me feel bad for the guy.

Still, you have to admire his service for the last 14 years.

He should have just stayed as House Dem leader.  There's nothing wrong in that.

Dean got what he got because they viewed him as a winner.  Who on this forum views Dean that way today?  I think the unions who are now free won't go to Dean.

Then, will they endorse someone else?

I can't see the unions going to Kerry or Lieberman. Not too sure on Dean. Edwards seems the likeliest.

If that happens, Edwards will be looking really good... Smiley

Althought I disagree with him , I've always admired Gephardt. He seems to really love helping people and seems like a pretty nice person.

If I was a Democrat he would've been my first choice.

Wel you aren't, and he obviously weren't...

I don't know much about him, but I agree that he appears to be honest and caring. I've never liked protectionists and unions though.

I'm not sure that after Dean's experiences with endorsements that any of the candidates want any more big endorsements.

He and Lieberman never ran away from their vote in favor of the war and I respect that.

Maybe with the loss of manufacturing jobs in NC and elsewhere and Edwards' speeches about it, his candidacy may really resonate with union voters.  How do unionists view trial lawyers?  Good, I'd guess, but I'm not sure.

During Edwards' career as a trial lawyer he always used to champion populist causes(ie; Us against Them. Us being normal people, Them being big business) and he's always made a lot of his blue collar background (his Dad was a textile worker).
He was also very nice to Gephardt in his speech last night.

Yeah, but did he do work for any unions? Any union cases or whatever?

Thank you. Mr. gephardt, for your service to my party for 35 years.  You have been a leading Democratic voice for decades.  Thank you.

P.S. run for senate!!!!

I think Gephardt never ran for major statewide office because he knew it would be a tough race for him.   I don't know that he'd be a very good statewide candidate at all.

After how poorly the unions performed in IA, does it matter?

Will his unions change their alignement now? And if, to whom?

This has to be a big hurt to the Dean campaign. Gephardt did better among blue collar workers, pro-war Democrats, and Moderate to Conservative Democrats. Those Democrats are not as likely to side with Dean(In fact, Kerry and Edwards did well among them in Iowa also), and so I think most Gephardt supporters will side with Dean's rivals. I think this is the beginning of Democrats opposed to Dean's nomination coalescing and joining around candidates other then Dean.

Dean planned for Gephardt to lose on Monday night.  That part came true. Whatever his strategy, he was planning for a post-Gephardt race.  Still, Dean has union support. Maybe some of those Gephardt unionists will join their brothers and sisters with Dean.  We'll know more soon, I'd suspect.

Gephardt is like the Dole of the Dem party.

Oddly enough, the Dems had the good sense to not vote for the guy whose raison d'etre was that he was next in line.  I still think Lamar Alexander would have placed better than Dole in 1996. I'll shower now, having used French.
