Personally I still think the Republican candidate has no chance of victory and that it will be a two person race between Ned Lamont (Democrat) and Joe Lieberman (Joe Lieberman).

They might try to force the Republican out of the race. I mean the Republican that no one knows much about. Then, the Republican party could basically endorse Lieberman sort of like they did in 1988.

This is, of course, assuming that Lieberman doesn't have any decency left in him.

Option 1 -I fully expect that Republicans in this state will (if they're smart) make the decision to throw their support and endorsement behind Lieberman's now all-but-inevitable independent candidacy in the wake of his apparently narrow loss in this primary, with the Republican candidate bowing out in favor of Joe Lieberman.

I really, really doubt that is going to happen.

The GOP candidate is a nothing and will poll under 20% in the general.

He's like Chris Bell with some gambling problems rolled in.

Schlesinger needs to be forced out so a real candidate can run under the GOP banner against 2 Democrats. Why not complicate things further?

Option 1, Schlesinger is a joke.

And he can't be forced out (unless you are going to use Mafia methods or some such...). He would have to willingly drop out for the GOP to find a new nominee.

Option 1, and having Shlesinger in the race would actually be the best option for the GOP.  No republican is going to win this race period.  With Schlesinger being as brutal as he is, Lieberman picks up a big chunk of the GOP vote that puts him over the top.  A stronger GOP canddiate won't get enough to win, but will take enough of the GOP vote away from Lieberman that gives the seat to Lamont

Option 1, 2 man race.

Republican Schlesinger stays in, but is not a significant player.

Lamont wins the election.

Option 1, hopefully the Republicans will get smart and withdraw any nominee and ensure a more crushing Lieberman victory though he will win anyway.
