In 1996 Bill Clinton managed to be Re-Elected President of the United States despite several scandals, liberal agenda, and the Republican majority in congress. What do you think cause America to Re-Elect a failed President over a statesman and war hero who devoted years to public service.

If the election were to be hold today as the 2008 election (assuming the candidates were the same health and ages as 1996), the election would shape up like this:

Clinton 274
Dole 264

This is because areas in the Deep South question Clinton's morals therefore the "Bible Belt" states go more toward the GOP.  Clinton still wins, but by the skin of his teeth.

I disagree. Clinton would carry WI, IA, OH, FL, WV, and probably MO.

WI, OH, IO - social conservatism pushes them toward Dole and away from scandel ridden Clinton

FL- Idk, certainly would be close

WV and MO- too heavily conservative now

Clinton wasn't 'scandal ridden' in 1996, the Lewinshy scandal didn't break until 1998 or 2010 in your timeline. Clinton would have won pretty handsomely

WI is not that socially conservative and Clinton was and is quite popular among the religious, even after the scandal broke.  IA and MO would be close, but Clinton could pull off and Iowan win.  Clinton did not do enough wrong to lose Ohio and Florida.  Both would be close, but Dole was dull.  Clinton had large support among the workers and the liberals handing him those.

Clinton (who I unfortunately never got to vote for, as I didn't turn 18 until almost 2 months after the election).

I'm not going to do my little Dr. Seuss rhyme comparing me voting for Clinton to Green Eggs and Ham. But, I would've voted Clinton every time.

The only "scandal" Clinton had in 1996 was Paula Jones. The Lewinsky fiasco didn't break until January 22, 1998.

I was 13 at the time, and couldn't understand why anyone would vote for a grouchy old man like Dole rather than hip, young Bill Clinton (age wasn't my main reason, just a factor) The internet phenomenon was still starting and we seemed to be in a new age, after the horrors of Reagan in the 80's. (Bush I was okay though) Not many people knew that Dole was a war hero.

And the whole Whitewater deal that lead to the Lewinsky thing.

CLinton would probably lose TN in 2008.

Which Clinton, Bill or Hillary?

Only the loony right paid attention to Whitewater. It was like Iran-Contra, i.e. incredibly boring details. People only paid attention to the Lewinsky case because there was sex involved. If Iran-Contra had had sex involved, the 1988 election would have been very different.

You wouldn't happen to be biased, by any chance?

He wasn't a failed President. Welfare reform, NAFTA, the Crime Bill and his economic plan were all major accomplishments.

Clinton is still one of the most popular presidents in history and many polls that come out today show that. If Clinton ran for election today, hed win every state he did in 96 and VA and CO. Clinton really didnt have real scandals, he just outraged right wingers for getting laid. Nothing illegal or important. Hed also win in a landslide probably getting 55%+ of the vote.
