1. hw bush was a northeastern republican

2.  nh, being filled with massachusetts refuges, wasnt too crazy about dukakis.

True, and it didn't help that Dukakis was reluctant to approve an emergency evacuation plan for the Seabrook nuclear reactor in NH. Still, NH was tied (with ID) for the 2nd most GOP state, which would be inconceivable today.
