For the following, assume they are at the state level.

Proposal 1
A constitutional amendment to ban state government, local governments, public colleges and universities, community colleges and school districts from discriminating against, or granting preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, economic status, color, ethnicity, ancestry, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting.

Nay. (agree with banning discrimination, but support affirmative action in some cases)

Proposal 1
I'd vote against this constitutional amendment.

Proposal 2
I'd vote against this bill.

Proposal 3
I'd vote for this bill.

Proposal 4
I'd vote against this bill.

Proposal 5
I'd support this bill.

Proposal 6
I'd vote against this resolution.

Proposal 7
I'd vote for this bill.

Proposal 8
ouch.  I'm a big fan of intellectual property rights, but ten years seems steep.

Proposal 9
I'd vote against this bill.

Proposal 10
I'd support this initiative.

Proposal 11
I do not support this initiative.

Proposal 12
I do not support this initiative.

Proposal 13
I'd vote against this proposal.

Proposal 14
I would not support this proposal.

Proposal 15
I would not vote to re-authorize the ban.

Proposal 16
I would not support this bill.

Proposal 17
This is a bit of a trick question.  I would not support any bill which made a timetable publicly available to any enemies of the USA.  Such information should be available to generals of the US and its allies but there's no good reason to make it available to the public.  I would support, in general, a removal of US troops from Iraq as soon as feasible.

Proposal 18
I would not support this censure, but I would support a bill making the wiretapping illegal and I would support a bill requiring the Bush administration to immediately stop all wiretapping.

No, because it includes economic status. (I just realized this after rereading it). Otherwise I'd vote yes.

Proposal 2
A bill to ban pregnant women from obtaining induced abortions once the pregnancy is at the point of 24 weeks gestation, except in the case of a threat to the woman's life is she continues the pregnancy.  Violators of this law could be guilty of murder depending on the reasons given for the pregnancy termination.

No due to the last sentence (the punishment shouldn't be equally severe to murder), otherwise I'd support it.

Proposal 3
A bill to legalize, for both recreational and medicinal purposes, the use of marijuana, and to adjust the prison sentences of persons guilty of marijuana use or possession accordingly.

Yes

Proposal 4
A bill to increase the minimum wage to $7.15 per hour, and to have the wage annually indexed to inflation.

Yes

Proposal 5
A bill to instate special taxes on products deemed morally unacceptable, such as alcohol (exempted for religious or medicinal purposes), tobacco, pornography, and violent video games.

No if it includes all of the above, though I'd support alcohol and tobacco taxes.

Proposal 6
A resolution urging the United States Congress to pass a constitutional amendment that would permit Congress to prohibit the physical desecration of the U.S. flag.

No

Proposal 7
A bill to abolish capital punishment and commute current death sentences to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

No, although I wouldn't mind terribly if it passed. I have to admit it would be preferable to the current system overall, so for that reason I might vote for it.

Proposal 8
A bill to establish clear penalties for violators of copyright law, including physical pirating of copyrighted music and films, and use of the Internet in acquiring copyrighted songs, movies, television shows, software, and text.  A person who uploads a copy of an album in advance of its official release date would be eligible for a maximum of ten years in prison.

No, the punishment is too severe.

For the following, assume that they are at the local level.

Proposal 9
An initiative to ban handguns in your city, with all handguns required to be turned in to the police effective four months from the date the initiative passes.

No

Proposal 10
{Assuming Proposal 3 is not put into place.}  An initiative to make laws against marijuana use and possession the lowest possible priority for local police in law enforcement.

Yes

Proposal 11
An initiative to require biology textbooks in your school district to have a sticker on the front that states, "Evolution is a theory, not a fact."

No

Proposal 12
An initiative to establish a curfew for those under the age of 18 to not be outside without a parent after 10pm on Sundays-Thursdays and 11pm on Fridays-Saturdays.

No

Proposal 13
An initiative to ban panhandling by the homeless on sidewalks and near traffic.

No

For the following, assume that they are at the national level.

Proposal 14
A proposal to extend current copyrights by another twenty years.

No

Proposal 15
A bill to re-authorize the ban of assault weapons which expired in September 2004.

Yes

Proposal 16
A bill to abolish the estate tax effective January 2010.

No

Proposal 17
A bill to require a timetable from the executive branch for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

Yes

Proposal 18
A motion to censure President Bush for his use of warrantless wiretapping on U.S. citizens.

At this point I would lean towards yes, though I'm open to arguments on both sides.

No, because it includes economic status. (I just realized this after rereading it). Otherwise I'd vote yes.

Considering that the current policies (such as legacy admissions) favor people of a higher economic status, that's a reason to vote yes.

Nay.

Proposal 1
Nay. It's a good idea in principle, but what about the University of Minnesota? Of the incoming graduate students to the math program, about 60% were oriental. How do we determine whether it's orientals getting preferential treatment or orientals being better qualified?

Proposal 2
Nay.

Proposal 3
Yea.

Proposal 4
Unsure.

Proposal 5
Nay.

Proposal 6
Nay.

Proposal 7
Not applicable in MN; we have no death penalty.

Proposal 8
Nay. Wording of this amendment illegalizes iTunes. Further, we need to update many, many copyright laws in light of the new technology we all enjoy.

For the following, assume that they are at the local level.

Proposal 9

Proposal 10
Yea.

Proposal 11

Proposal 1 - The ban is a good idea, but it doesn't need to be a constitutional amendment.  Merely legislative.

Proposal 2 - Yes on the first part, no on the second.

Proposal 3 - No.  There is a big difference in the effect that tobacco and marijuana have on a persons perception and reaction times, hence the reason why one is legal and the other is illegal.

Proposal 4 - No.  I would support a revision in the rate every ten years, but not annually.

Proposal 5 - Sin taxes already exist on some products, so this bill would not be necessary.

Proposal 6 - All 50 states have expressed this desire, so the proposal is not necessary.  Anyway, my answer would be yes.

Proposal 7 - Hell no.

Proposal 8 - Eh . . . sounds good enough for me.

Proposal 9 - No.  People have the right to own guns.  The town can indicate what type of guns can be banned (such as full-auto), but they cannot ban them entirely.

Proposal 10 - No.

Proposal 11 - No.  However I would vote for an initiative that requires public schools to teach creationism in the proper context in English/History classes where it belongs.

Proposal 12 - Yes.  As long as the kids are not at a job or coming home from a job after those hours, they have no purpose being out late unattended.

Proposal 13 - Yes.

Proposal 14 - Unsure.

Proposal 15 - Yes.

Proposal 16 - Yes.

Proposal 17 - Hell no!

Proposal 18 - Hell no!

Simple; we ban the preferential treatment and see whether the current racial composition stays roughly the same.  If orientals are, in general, simply better qualified for the program, there's nothing wrong with admitting more of them than other races.  If they are being admitted because they were given higher preference for being oriental, I think that would be a problem.

No, because it includes economic status. (I just realized this after rereading it). Otherwise I'd vote yes.

Considering that the current policies (such as legacy admissions) favor people of a higher economic status, that's a reason to vote yes.

Well I definitely would favor getting rid of legacy admissions, but I do feel that there should be some preference given to those of lower economic status, since it is much more difficult for them to suceed in school and the overall economy would be better off with them being given greater opportunity to succeed.
