Jim Webb will debate Sen. George Allen September 17th on MSNBC's "Meet the Press" and then on George Stephanopoulos' program on the 18th.  I'm really looking forward to this, as I believe both candidates to be solid debaters.

Here's the news link (yes, I know it's a college newspaper):

Allen is horrible in anything where he has to think on the spot. He is easily one of the dumbest men in the Senate (although Jim Bunning has him beat).

If Webb can hold his own in the debate (or better yet crush Allen) we will have a real race on our hands.

The debate is this Sunday.  I plan on watching, and I hope many of you will too.  It should be good.

I'm going to watch it but most likely on the internet afterward because I'm a hobo and I like to sleep late on the weekends. Can't wait for the "macaca" questions.

I'll be watching, and something tells me that Jim Webb will crush the imbecile in a debate.

Jim Webb only needs to continually beat Allen over the head on these subjects and he will CRUSH Allen:

1 - Allen's "NO" vote on minimum wage increase
2 - Macaca
3 - Allen's friends at the CCC
4 - Iraq War
5 - Call out Allen for being a liar (Allen's latest commercial claims Webb only served under Reagan for 10 months, while in reality he served under him four years as Ass. Sec of Defense and Sec. of Navy).
6 - Social Security
7 - Allen's vote against body armor for troops

Booo Urns I say. That really sucks too b/c Rasmussen is pretty accurate. That was probably done before the vast majority of people saw the body armor commercial though.

On the bright side, new Ras polls also show Cardin up 7 and the big one is that Tester is up 9 on Burns.

Ok, we're off and running...

Allen is already attacking Webb for his war stance, but Webb is doing a good job deflecting these attacks.

this is awful.

both of these guys should be managing a kmart somewhere, not running for the us senate.

i really dont know why i like allen so much.  i know he doesnt understand any of the issues he speaks about.  he just has that amiable dunce quality about him.  he seems like a likable guy.

i asked my significant other her first impressions of the candidates.  she said webb looks like he has fake hair.  she says allen has an accent (which is strange since he grew up in california)

Hey guys, lets try not to spoil it. For those of us in central time, the debate doesn't start for another 10 minutes.

I missed the first 10 mintues but I thought Webb absolutely destroyed Allen on Iraq/terror. It was the first time in a while that I've seen a Democrat do that to a Republican.

On the other hand, Webb's answers on the women in the military and affirmative action weren't quite as smooth as one would hope.

I think I saw enough to call the debate a Webb victory. Shame he has no money at all compared to Allen.

given that webb has a long history of misogyny, this is to be expected.

Allen appeared to dodge the question on the treatment of terrorist prisoners, while Webb gave a valid and thought-out response.  It got to the point that Allen almost appeared to be agreeing with him afterwards.

Allen has said much the same things in the past ("Women don't belong in foxholes", Allen's opposition to co-education at VMI).  And if we're going to take cheap shots here, people could just as easily call Allen a racist (not just because of recent incidents) as much as they could label Webb a misogynist.

I think Webb just handled the discussion of his treatise on women in combat quite well.

Uh oh, here comes inevitable the "macaca" question...and Allen still is making himself look like the innocent Southern boy.

Webb is a poor orator, but I think his answers are direct and bluntly answer the questions where as Allen seems like he is trying to be slippery.

Allen ducked half the questions.

Webb won this debate, although he could have done much better.

And that's the game!

With all bias aside, I would say that Webb won the debate, not handily, but he did.  While he is not the greatest orator, he certainly did a better job than Allen, who seemed to try to be evading several of Russert's questions.

Allen is a complete dope.

I liked how Webb made the distrinction that the people backing the "McCain/Warner" bill are those who served, and the other side is all "theorists" like George Allen who never served.

Webb also said that "George Allen did not serve in Vietnam, and even the French served"......................hilarious.

Well, the debates over now and I think that Webb (especially with the Macaca issue and such) slaughtered Allen. In all fairness however, I think Russert was putting a little more pressure on Allen than he did Webb...but I think Allen really cracked. Like at the end when asked about the flags and the noose and such, he started talking about football. What the ?

I don't know that this debate will change minds - if a person watching had a proclivity to lean one way or the other, I think they will believe their guy won. That said, I think Webb came across as a more serious man than Allen, which could possibly do him some favors among the undecided.

This is exactly why so many people say he has that "Bush-like" um......uh......"quality" to him.

On Colin Powell's recent remarks:

"I don't disagree with him, I just have a different point of view."  -George Allen

Certainly not a "slaughtering" by Webb.  Small victory at best.
