I'm curious to know whether Harold Stassen ran in the general election for president.  I know that he tried for the Republican nomination nine times, but I also thought that he ran in the election also as an independent.  Of course, can't find any info confirming or denying that.

Thanks in advance

he ran for president of the United States nine times, governor of Minnesota four times, governor of Pennsylvania twice, the U.S. Senate twice, and mayor of Philadelphia once.
never as an independant.

Thanks for the info.

If he didn't run in the general elections as an Independent, what party did he run under?  Or did he just run in the primaries?

Thanks and

Aloha from Honolulu!

He almost won the 1948 Republican Nomination. He had defeated General Douglas MacArthur in Wisconsin, MacArthur's home state. He lost to Dewey in Oregon due to his proposal to outlaw the CPUSA. Had he won in Oregon he would hav been nominated for President.

Anyone knew what races he won? I know he won none of his presidential bids and 2 (right?) of his guberntaorial runs, but what about the others?

He was elected Senator from Minnesota. He did well in the 1948 Republican Primaries.

I've always felt sorry for Harold Stassen. He tried on I believe 8 or 9 elections to become the Republican nominee. He reminded me of guys like Debs or Bryan. Try as you might, he just couldn't win.

The word "Stassenitis" is used now for continuous candidates for President.

Some people suffering from this politicval disease are Lyndon LaRouche and Ralph Nader.

Add Earl Dodge to that list (Prohibition Party nominee every election since I believe 1984).

He has been the nominee since 1976 I think.

Nope, Lawrence was right, since 1984. In 1980 he ran for Vice-President with Benjamin Bubar under the "Statesman" political party. In 1976 he also ran with Bubar, then as the Prohibition candidate.

He didn't run in 1968 or 1972.

So he ran for VP in '76 and '80 and President in '84,'88,'92,'96 and '00.

National Statesman Party was the official name of the Prohibition Party durring the 70's. Their Newsletter The National Statesman is where they get the name from.

The Party has actually split into two factions, to make membership even smaller. (Pro-Dodge and Anti-Dodge)

I think whichever side cracks 100 votes will lead them in the future.

Yes they do. I'm a fan of that site, and found this place through Politics1. I think the party is going down the crapper very unceremoniously, but, that's politics. Too bad *Sigh*.

This split is quite tragic. Dodge had a convention in his living room in 2003 that had 8 deleagtes (all his family members) and they nominated him.

This may be the fisrt time since 1872 the Prohibtion Party had not been on the ballot. Sad

I'm almost tempted to vote for them out of sheer pity, but I can't, cause I'm not old enough...

It is a very Conservative Christian Party. It models it's views after the views of Henry Ward Beecher and Billy Sunday.

Yes, I know. Although, when they split for the first time back in 1896 over silver, One group The "Narrow Gougers" just focused on the prohibition issue. The "Broad Gougers" adopted a populistic platform.
