Wow, I agree with all 11 points.  Newt is a smart man, which made him a good Speaker.  I just wish he hadn't been ousted, because the current Speaker Hastert hasn't done a single thing except being a body in the seat next to the Vice President.

As much as I hate to say this, if we can get more done in this country that benefits all of America, not just the liberals, if Pelosi becomes Speaker, then I'll go with that.  I also hope that Nancy Pelosi will actively listen to the Republicans and take what they say to heart and not try to advance her own liberal agenda and have Republicans in the chairmanship of major departments, not just Democrats.  At the very least, if the Republicans retain control of the House, then we need to elect a different Speaker.

These pretty much fall into two few categories.

Some are issues that the vast majority of Americans either don't care about or strongly support, and anyone who would strongly oppose it probably isn't going to be voting Republican anyway (1, 3, 4, 5 and 9).

Some are amusingly vague statements that could mostly be statements by every party ever and requires no real action or promise-keeping (2, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11).

Notice how there are no specific commitments or "how"s?  There are just specific partisan issues that don't really solve the "big" issues, and then the larger-scale issues get generic, no-details treatment.

This list is perfectly "whatever," but you have to ask yourself: if Republicans couldn't do simple feel-good, broad reform with such a big majority, what gives?

It isn't surprising, and I don't fault the GOP for it, but this ain't no Contract with America.

My analysis of these proposals...

1. Make English the Official Language of Government--Would accomplish absolutely nothing. Meaningless waste of time of an issue.
2. Control the Borders--Big business interests in the GOP will kill this idea.
3. Keep God in the Pledge--Another meaningless issue in the grand scheme of things, and the religious right is a double edged sword for the GOP in any event.
4. Require a Voter ID Card--Not an issue that is going to get anyone excited
5. Repeal the Death Tax, for Good--Might sound good in a soundbite, but once people learn anything about it they'll realize it will hurt the vast majority of people to do this.
6. Restore Property Rights--Might be effective on a local basis, but again, big business is the one that really benefits from eminent domain nowadays anyway, so I highly doubt the GOP is going to push this nationally.
7. Achieve Sustainable Energy Independence--Good idea, but again, business has other plans I'm sure.
8. Control Spending and Balance the Budget--It's a bit late for that, why should we trust them to start doing it now when they haven't in the past? Not going to get anywhere with this one.
9. Tie Education Funding to Teacher Accountability--Not a bad idea in theory, but I suspect the devil is in the details here and it will end up being a lot worse than it sounds. Swing voters don't want public schools decimated.
10. Defend America From the Irreconcilable Wing of Islam--Everyone agrees on this, so it's a non-issue.
11. Focus on Iran and North Korea--Good idea, but again, the track record proves otherwise, so why should we trust Bush to start doing this now?
