No, he should have blasted Islam harder. He should have more strongly the religion of the moon god named Allah.

The moon god and Islamic Allah are not one in the same.  Obviously.  Islam worships the exact same G-d as you and I.  How should he have blasted Islam?

Only those who have bought into liberal propaganda buy that line. The same God? Give me a break.

Islam has always held that it is the same God and that (for example) Jesus was a Prophet.

Oh and I think my response to J-Mann acted as a response to bono too.  if it didn't, I'd be happy to offer another response.

What they claim and what is fact are two different things. The God as described by Mohammed is very different from the God of the Jews & Christians. Allah was derived originally from Hubal the moon god.

same God the Father, but no God the Holy Spirit and God the Son (jesus) really was God, not just a prophet.

Don't know.  Don't care.  I do think he was misinterpreted.  On the other hand, it wasn't very diplomatic.  Obviously he was quoting a 14th century Byzantine Emperor.  And the attention span of the average middle easterner isn't much longer than the average American's, apparently.  They are also as easy to excite, apparently.  And unfortunately.  At least they have an excuse, what with the low literacy rates and all.  He might have made clear whether he agreed with that Byzantine Emperor.  But then again that may have detracted from his point.  I don't know.  I do know I won't vote in this poll.  Ratzinger is a shy, extremely intelligent, retiring academic.  He may or not have been the best choice for that job, but he was among John Paul II's most loyal lieutenants.  And he was only trying to open a dialogue on the 20th anniversary of the Assisi conference.  His central theme was to compare the Logos of Christianity to the Islamic view of transcendence of God.  As I understand it, anyway.  My guess is that he's far more educated than anyone on this forum, including myself, and he had a point to make.  Unfortunately he didn't distance himself from politically incorrect remarks made in the late middle ages.  Perhaps even more unfortunately, society expects us to apologize for every remark we make that some hypersensitive, reactionary person perceives as a cause for grievance.

"What else should I be
All apologies
What else could I say
Everyone is gay
What else could I write
I don't have the right
What else should I be
All apologies

In the sun
In the sun I feel as one
In the sun
In the sun
I'm married
Buried

I wish I was like you
Easily amused
Find my nest of salt
Everything is my fault
I'll take all the blame
Aqua seafoam shame
Sunburn with freezeburn
Choking on the ashes of her enemy

In the sun
In the sun I feel as one
In the sun
In the sun
Married, Maried, Maried!
Buried!
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

All in all is all we are...
All in all is all we are...
All in all is all we are...
All in all is all we are..."

I don't think it was right to apologize in the sense that if I was a Muslim I wouldn't have demanded it. But as Al points out, I guess he had to.

THe whole thing is completely ridiculous though what he said wasn't very offensive at all. And it is very ironic that Muslims get so mad for being called violent that they commit...yeah, violence.

And "Jerusalem" you have no idea what you're talking about. Ever heard of the Christians in North Africa?

Islam never modernized.

Actually it did, it just lost that modernity as a response to fanatic crusading terrorists.  During the European dark ages, for example, the keepers of science were in the great universities of the Near East.  Places like Damascus, Cairo, and Baghdad.  This is why so many of our math/science words begin with the definite article Al, as in alcohol, alkaline, aldehyde, and algebra.  Of course, although these early practicioners of alchemy, medicine, and apothecary accumulated useful information, it was only when the Laws of Chemical Combination were established (late 1700s) that chemistry, as we know it, came to be a scientific discipline.  But the arabs were the ones who laid the groundwork for modern chemical sciences.  They also invented algebra, which didn't come into general use in europe till the mid-1700s.  What happened to the great schools of thought in the Near East?  Well, some nutty suicidal people from England, France, and Germany hell bent on holy war to reclaim the "holy land" from the barbarians and infidels came with swords and spears, and with god on their side, ransacked the place.  The semitic peoples of the levant became isolationists, as you might imagine.  They feared terrorism, and in a kneejerk reaction became prejudiced and fearful of the fanatic Christians who were terrrorizing them.  They circled their wagons, looked inward, afraid to do business with the outside world, and their universities suffered.  Their knowledge was lost.  This is what happens when people get paranoid about religious terrorists.  This is what happens when people become bigoted toward groups and stop admitting them to study in their universities.  When people panic, become fearful, become isolationist, and exhibit xenophobicity, the knowledge of their civilization decays.

I think you may be mistaking Islam for the Zensunni wanderers of Frank Herbert's Dune universe.
