He will be an energetic 84 years old.

Discuss.... any possible primary challengers? If he doesnt run who could the dems win with?

Good Lord. Stevens is batsh**t crazy. I honestly think that Stevens and Byrd are both going to drop dead on the Senate floor, as neither of them seem to have any intention of retiring.

Going by the Thurmond precedent, I don't see any reason why Stevens shouldn't run again in 2014 as he will only be 90 years old.  Why should only South Carolina have to deal with old coots?

I hope he runs again... and wins the primary, because no one would re-elect THAT crazy coot, it would be like handing us a seat.
Unless that is I am underestimating alaska

The man was re-elected with over 80% of the vote in 2002, if I recall correctly. You would not be handed the seat.

He was a bit nuts then, but has gone to completley bats%#& crazy since then.  ith that being said Stevens is much like Byrd, has the seat no matter what till he dies.

Why do they never retire?  I wouldn't want to trail out Tony Knowles again but if thats the only candidate we have then I hope he and Maria Cantwell campaign together.

Stevens will die in his Senate seat.  For Republicans, this is precisely the reason why they want to make sure and hold onto the Governorship.

Coincidentally, why is Sarah Palin currently beating Knowles?  Surely he is the better known candidate and people are inclined to elect him after his narrow loss in 2004.  He also had a good record as Governor and shouldn't Palin be unpopular as she is a Republican, i.e. the party of the scandalous Governor Frank Murkowski?

Why does that have to do with Stevens?

Oh for pete's sake.  It seems like the only people in the whole country who seem to like Stevens are the people of Alaska.  Which suits them well, I guess, but still means that the rest of us have to put up with his senile ramblings.

Didn't the younger Stevens have some sort of scandal where he took money from some lobbying group (or something like that), and then made commemorative hats to celebrate it?

Stevens is popular b/c of PORK PORK PORK.

Alaskans love that crazy old coot b/c he secures $7 in federal spending for Alaska for every $1 Alaska pays in federal taxes, making it the #1 recipient per capita of federal money and pork. Alaska is nothing but a money-sucking black hole that makes the rest of the nation pay for it's stupid projects like the infamous $250 million Bridge to Nowhere.

Someone should put Stevens under before he bankrupts all of our great-great grandchildren by spending $2 trillion to build a skilift to the top of Mount McKinley or something else equally as stupid.

No one, not even Stevens, knows what the next two years hold.

The entire situation could be completely different by that time.

In the meantime, how about veteran Republican Congressman Don Young runnng for the Senate nomination for 2008?  He has been in the House since 1973.  He deserves to be promoted to the Senate.  Although, even he'll be 75 then.  So better find someone else.

Another thing, one must not forget, Ted Stevens is third in line to the Presidency of the United States.

What if, Heaven forbid, something happens to Bush, then to Cheney, then to Hastert?
