Just a quick question, with Deval Patrick the favorite to become the next governor of Massachusetts, how many black governors have there been in the past 30 years??

The only one I can think of is Doug Wilder of Virginia. I must be missing some others.

Can anyone help?

The next Lt. governor of New York will be a black blind man in case it matters.

Oh yeh, Sarah Palin in Alaska. And maybe Titus in Nevada, but it's not looking too likely at this point.

Some modern ones include Ann Richards, Kathleen Sebelius, Jennifer Granholm, Jodi Rell, Christine Gregorie...Im pretty sure that Sarah Palin can be added to the list after the elections.

George Wallace's wife. Tongue The first female governor was elected n Wyoming sometime in the 30s. But I don't remember the name. There is also Linda Lingle, Janet Napolitano, Kathleen Townshend (?), Blanco...quite a few.

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend wasn't elected here.  She was Lieutenant Governor for two terms but blew a big lead when she ran for the top spot in 2002.

The first female governors were Nellie Tayloe Ross of Wyoming and Miriam "Ma" Ferguson of Texas (who ran as a stand-in for her husband, an impeached ex-governor), both elected in 1924.

Doug Wilder, governor of VA in the early 90's, is thus far the only African-American elected governor.  Deval Patrick  of MA stands a good chance of being the second.

L.A. Mayor Tom Bradley was nearly elected CA governor in 1982...

Neither Doug Wilder nor Louisiana's reconstruction-era governor WPS Pinchback (not sure if I got the initials right) looks Black to me.
Of course, Pinchback's father was pure White.

Well, well.. Like an overwhelming majority of American blacks neither would, of course, be considered "black" in South Africa.

They used to tell this story about the late lamented Pres. Joaquin Balaguer of the Dominican Republic.  A visiting US journalist asked him, how many whites where there in the country.  Without blinking, the President responded "around 90% of the population". The journalist was incredulous. The President then asked: "and how you define 'colored' ?" "Well, if a man has some black ancestry, he is colored." - "But that's exactly how we define white."

Black Governors

Only 2, both mentioned previously

Pinckney Benton Stewart Pinchback, Republican, became Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana upon the death of the previous Lieutenant Governor.  He then served as Acting Governor of Louisiana for 6 weeks in 1872 and 1873, following the impeachment of the Governor.

Douglas Wilder, Democrat, Virginia, the first, and to date, the only, elected black Governor in U.S. history, serving 1990-1994.

There is an excellent black history website, www.donsmcclureconsultants.com with indepth details on matters related to black history.
