So, what does everyone think? Will the latest testimony about Allen's racist past put an end not only to his '08 plans (which everyone agrees are already doomed), but his Senate reelection campaign as well?

For now I'm saying no but we will see what happens. I'm dying to see some new polls on the Allen-Webb race.

Clearly he's not "finished" in the senate race.  He's still a decent favorite until evidence proves otherwise.  But as far as 2008 goes?  No chance.

We need more polls in Virginia and Tennessee.... because I would say at this point that its very possible for the DEMS to lose NJ and still win the senate.......

No, it depends on whether the media runs with this story or not.

Early indictions seem to be that they are going to. To me most of this stuff is pretty pontless and stupid but it does really seem to be hurting him.

Yeah, he should be finished with close races after winning this one.

No, it depends on whether the media runs with this story or not.

It's a negative story about a republican.

I assume your question was rhetorical?

Yeah, he should be finished with close races after winning this one.

Yep. He won't even come close in his quest for the presidency.

I think in the wider tapestry Allen is finished.  I originally viewed him as being the dark horse conservative candidate for President.  He may win re-election this year, but he will win narrowly and then I don't think the GOP will give him any wider roles nationally or in Congress.

I actually think Allen is finished for the senate race as well.  Not that the race won't be close but Webb is a good candidate and, though not the best fundraiser, Schumer has tons of money to back him up.

Meanwhile, Allen is pissing off Asian-Americans, Jews, and blacks and Webb is reaching out to his Scotts-Irish populist roots and military connections to win in the Southwest and Hampton Roads.  Webb will do very well in Northern Virginia of course.  If Kilgore had trouble up North, I don't see why Allen will have an easier time of it.

I assume that those who would have voted for Allen in Virginia are the sort whose support will be solidified by evidence of racism, not alienated.

I think he'll come close in his bid for the nomination if he even runs.

Probably not, though he deserves to be. The trouble with Allen is that he expected to be a shoe-in for re-election and now that the race is competitive, he doesn't like it

And given his appalling conduct in making the 'macaca' remark and his, far from dignified, response to a question regarding his Jewish ancestry, the strain is starting to show

Someone needs to make a poll asking which minority, ethnicty or racial group will Allen get in some kind of scandal with next because he has went from Indian to Jewish to black in like a couple of weeks.

I'm sorry Walter, but I honestly don't see what your beef is with Jim Webb.  You can disagree with him as a Democrat, but he is ten times the man George Allen will ever be from a character perspective, and I've met both candidates.

Is this a joke?

George Allen is still the favorite until polls say other wise, Bob Menendez is certainly more "done" George Allen (but neither is), and I don't see a thread about Menendez.

This thread is a just a pratical joke by a joke poster

Quite true. I don't see how this could hurt him - it probably helps him outside DC suburbs.  The only way this can have any negative effect if it somehow drives up the black turnout.  Allen is still the heavy favorite in this race, barring further mishaps.

Now, as for the national nomination, he might be damaged goods now.  Chances are, he isn't going to be a majority leader either.  But a comfortably established senator - like, say, Trent Lott  - he is likely to remain till the day he croacks.

im not sure about webb's 'character'.  he is a well documented misogynist.  but, as usual, the intolerance of democrats is allowed without scrutiny.

so far all you all have all allen is claims that he may have used the n-word 30 years ago, even though ive yet to see, read, or hear proof.

you dont have to look very far to see webb's views about women.
