What if Rhode Island doesn't object to the amendment to the articles to allow the national government to tax?  Do the articles last longer?  Is the constitution ever formed?

I think that the articles would last- rather than throwing them out, the Constitutional Convention would have likely just edited the articles, like they were convened to do.

If the Articles are not replaced by the Constitution then we will see the Union split under the stresses of the Napoleonic Wars, probably no later than 1798 as the stress of the events corresponding to the Quasi War lead some States to side with Britain and others France.

Ha. That's optimistic timing for the split. MY guess is we see dixie slowly swallowing upp the rest of the states then go  on a miliarist rampage.
