Russel Simmons ad

Yo, what’s up, y’all, it’s Russell Simmons.

Today I’m coming to you to ask you to vote for my good friend, Michael Steele to become the next Senator from Maryland.

Four years ago, I came here to campaign against the LG.

Today, I come here to stand beside him.

I trust him because he’s lived up to every commitment he made to our communities.

He’s increased the state contracts for minority business by more than a third.

He’s reduced recidivism among ex-offenders.

He went against the grain and gave people drug treatment rather than prison.

I trust the Lieutenant Governor.

Michael Steele knows the issues that affect us because he comes from our struggle.

For too long, our voice has been ignored in Washington.

Michael Steele could change that.

Let’s go to work now and change the game.

Go to the polls and vote for Michael Steele for United States Senator.

Make sure you empower yourself on Tuesday, November 7. Vote.

Michael Steele: I’m Michael Steele, candidate for the United States Senate, and I approved this message.

What the ad should say:

Yo, what's up y'all, I'm Russell Simmons. I want you to vote for Michael Steele because he's black.

Please ignore the facts that he will vote against stem cell research and raising the minimum wage, while demonizing homosexuals. Forget the fact that he will vote to get rid of Social Security. Forget the fact that he will do nothing to change the course in the Iraq War.  Forget the fact that he will vote for every free trade agreement and every piece of corporate welfare.  Forget that he will side with the big corporations over the American worker everytime. Forget that he will vote with George Bush and Karl Rove 95% of the time.  Forget that he'll be another Republican rubber stamp for the Bush adminstration.

Ignore all that..........and vote for him because's black.

Peace, I'm Russell Simmons.

It's only a matter of time before Steele starts airing ads that say:

Narrator: "Michael Steele...he's black".
Steele: "I'm Michael Steele, and I approve this message".

Steele's constant attempts to seem "down with da hood" continue to be a source of amusement.  I love how is one selling point in this race is that he's black.

I'm sorry, this is real?

Haha.

I also can't imagine Russell Simmons saying "recidivism."  Maybe that's just me.

Michael Steele is like a black Rick Santorum...........except that he does a better job of hiding his true feelings than Santorum does.

Frankly it makes me sick that Russell Simmons or any other prominent figure in the black community would cut an ad for him. Would Russell Simmons endorse Rick Santorum?? Hell no!

He's also been well-known for a long time because he is the older brother of "Run" from the legendary rap group Run-DMC.

If Rick Santorum was black, I bet he would have Simmons' endorsment. Granted, if Santorum was black...he would have a talking point to revert to everytime he screwed up, as Steele does now.

Just wait. Steele will stop this "Pro-hood Republican" skit and be a serious candidate for a couple of weeks. However, as soon as he gets smacked with a scandal of some nature or as soon as his poll numbers start to look grim...he will go right back to this kind of idiocy as if to say "Well, at least I'm black".

I'm sure you would have supported that ad if it was Bob Ehrlich or some other white guy running for the seat against Mfume, hack.

I love how everyone is shocked by this. Amazing how we never hear this outrage when the Dems do this to turn out the black vote.

my guess is because the democratic platform is actually beneficial to the African-American community, while the Republican platform is not?

Some aspects of Steele's campaign sound like an inversion of Martin Luther King's urging to judge people not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.  (To be fair, he's probably not the only such pol around today.)  At the debate this week (before a predominantly African-American audience) he urged people to look beyond his race--as if his race wasn't already obvious without him calling that extra attention to it?  And I don't know why he insists on the "yo" and "homeboy" slang; not only does it sound put on, but it might not be helpful with older African-Americans, who may share Bill Cosby's view that constantly talking in such terms is not a good way to get ahead and present yourself.

At the same time, Glenn Ivey (the popular, African-American state's attorney for Prince George's County) has recorded an ad for Cardin that is scheduled to air on black-oriented radio stations.  I wonder if Cathy Hughes (Radio One founder and Steele supporter) is letting it play?

That's because we expect them to pander out of desperation. A republican racial panderer is a rather new idea.
