While I do not support the idea of criminalizing abortion in the situation where the life of the mother is at risk (or rape), I think this is an overall step in the right direction.

Speaking of Nicaragua, the stock market recently reported large increases in share prices of wire coathanger factories in that country.

New York Times Magazine did a nice expose of women in El Salvador, which has a law very similar to this, which was quite interesting. Overall a horrible decision. Clinics aren't even sterile in many of those countries what's the chance that a back-alley abortion would be?

Phil, one country that I do know that has a complete abortion ban except for rape, incest and the woman's life is Chile but then again Chile is one of the most socially conservative countries in the world.

The main reason why the Wilson government allowed the legalisation of abortion (and allowed is the correct word; it was a private members bill introduced by a Liberal M.P) over here in the '60's was mainly due to the horrors of backstreet abortions.

Just something to remember at times.

The article said Chile totally banned abortion.

The tales of widespread "back alley" abortions are greatly exaggerated, in all the countries that legalized abortion. One of the leaders of the US effort admitted recently he cooked the figures to get the public on their side.

I always get confused. Maybe they did. I do know they just decriminalized divorce about three years ago.

Well you can never have too many unwanted children living in squalor and eating from a garbage dump.

I love the compassionate responses in favor of abortion.

Brazil is a country that where it's illegal except for rape, incest and the woman's life.

This is a very bad law.

How is it better for them to starve as babies or toddlers than to be terminated as a ball of cells?

Nicaragua has about 32.000 backstreet abortion per year. I don't have any figures for the mortality rate in connection with these operations, but it probably ain't low.

Chile is one of the most socially conservative countries in the world.

Yes and no. It's laws are very much conservative, and most over 50 or 60 year olds are too. That said, the 30s and 40s are only vaguely more conservative then Australia, although a *lot* more Christian. The younger Chilenos are actually quite leftist. There's a strong nationalist streak but Chile, especially Valparaiso and Santiago, is moving quite a lot to the left. Economically...well, probably best described as very right wing protectionism.

Basically Chile's in a muddle but it seems to be working. It has the best quality of life and strongest economy in South America. That said, the poor in Chile are a lot poorer then in Argentina because of the cost of living. Also, many of them are Peruvian or Bolivian immigrants, most of questionable legality.

The politics is odd too-they keep electing socialist Presidents, but the Congress is held by the conservatives and will be for a long time, because of Pinochet's senators appointed for life. So, for example, the education law that was passed just before the end of Pinochet's dictatorship causes massive protests every now and then, the President has pledged to basically scrap it, it's unpopular with the majority of Chilenos, but it is still in effect because of the Congress...although it has been changed a little.

All in all, Chileno law is more conservative then the actual country, which isn't all that conservative-it's just VERY Christian, primarily of course Catholic. In many areas it's more leftwing then Australia, the most easily noticeable example is that pot is EVERYwhere. In others, it's behind. But basically, I'd say it is kinda like Queensland in the Aussie sense, maybe Georgia or something in the US sense.
