What bothers me most is that Allen is using excerpts and giving them either the wrong context, or absolutely no context at all. The first example listed on the press release, the one with a man turning a boy upside down and putting his penis in his mouth, could very well be a biography of Mark Foley ... we just can't tell from the ambiguous light it is portrayed in.

And Allen is supposedly doing this because he's worried about Virginia's families? Give me a break. If it was a "real" concern, he would have broke the news months ago, when everyone else knew about it. For God's sake, some of the books are more than a decade old. It's not like Webb was hiding any of this.

No, it's pretty clear that this is a desperate, last-ditch attempt to get over the hump in a campaign. There are no angels in this race (or any other, for that matter), but this sort of bull is the lowest of the low. Some of the greatest books in history could be construed as pornographic and demeaning if they're only given a paragraph worth of show.

I mean the GOP is the party of child molestation so of course they need to attack...

Come on! That a load'a crap and you know it... that's like saying the Catholic Church is the religion of child molestation... it's baloney and simply bellow the belt IMHO.

As for Webb's novels, it's pretty damn weird! beyond that i dont know... Webb comes across as a bit cooky somtimes while Allen's just plain stupid and insensitive... what a choice a weirdo and an idiot! LOL!

I also like how they say "thousands of pages."  That's what, three or four novels?  I guess "in the three novels penned by Webb, there are few strong female characters" just doesn't sound as interesting.  Because it's not.

I don't like Webb.  I do think he is sexist.  But what I like even less is the Republican Party's last-ditch efforts to excite those who vote on moral issues.  From the Michael Acuri "bad call" to this, this is among the more loathesome strategies I've seen in what seems to me like an unusually loathesome campaign year.

If chickenhawk Allen had served, he would have known that would Webb wrote was pretty common during the Vietnam war. Instead, Allen is attacking Webb because Allen is a dumb chickenhawk.

I knew this race was close, but I never knew that Allen was this desperate -perhaps he and his campaign managers know something that we don't.  Something that all the articles and polls have not shown.  Maybe matters are far worse for Allen than all the rest of us have been led to believe.

What better way has Allen got to distract from the issues at hand ...
... it's unfortunate that these races (and even the outcome of an entire election) cannot be based on issues that will have a profound effect on our future (i.e. Global/ Personal health, National Debt, Border/ Port security, Economy ... etc.)

I look at negative ads as only a distraction (a smokescreen) ... be they (D) or (R) or (Other).

So if Allen's sister writes it, the it-is-a-fictional-book excuse is okay, but if Webb writes it, then the it-is-a-fictional-book excuse isn't? Tongue

According to FoxNews, Allen is facing a man named Joe Webb. Scroll down to political headlines. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/index.html

I've read a lot of fiction. I think it's a little weird to have gay incest pedophilia in a book, I mean I've read a lot of stuff and never seen that. I'm not saying he's advocating anything but it's definitely abnormal and is not an illegitimate question.

Liberal bloggers have countered with Sisters, an obscure novel by Lynne Cheney, supposedly with explicit lesbian situations.  What a stupid, stupid debate.

Didn't Barbara Boxer write a novel in which the main character, a highly un-subtle allusion to herself, featured in a steamy sex scene?

But yeah, this issue is one of the more ridiculous to surface during the VA Senate race.  In any case, at least Jim Webb knows how to read and write.

Your high school English teacher?  MODU, I think teaching standards have improved slightly since the 1920's.

What an idiotic "controversy." I am a writer myself, and have written and published plenty of fiction, and I can't believe anyone would be stupid enough to think that when someone writes about something, he is endorsing it. That's like saying that anyone who writes a novel about the Nazis endorses genocide.

It was my understanding, BTW, that the book written by George Allen's sister was non-fiction. But of course, it wouldn't surprise me if Allen doesn't comprehend the difference between an autobiography and a novel.

Perhaps more relevant to whether George Allen should be defeated.

From Jennifer Allen's book:

It would seem so - but the "mothereffin' dynamite" seems to have been placed under Allen for being stupid enough to try and make an issue of this.
