Arthur Marwick was a controversial historian, best known for his work on war and social change (especially the so-called "Marwick Thesis... the view that war was the most important engine of social change).

From the obituaries you linked to alone he seems like a freedom fighter. Of course, I wouldn't say that war is the most important engine of social change in the long run. In the short run (as long as a human lifetime), I could agree with that. But in the long run, technological advances are probably a bigger factor.

Arthur Marwick was an exceptional historian, and I cited his works frequently when at university. Social change is such a dynamic theory and he managed to distill it down to something that was accessable and rational. His own conclusions were very open ended and (deliberately in my opinion) also open to question from opposing angles.

Social history owes a great deal to 'leftist' historians even now as their methods are being challenged. But from experience you really couldn't begin to talk about class in society unless you read up on Marwick!

In studying history I've found much of what he wrote to be very interesting not to mention useful in essay writing.

Approve.
