It's getting close to the end of the year, close enough that given how long it would take this forum to decide I'd like to start a Person of the Year 2006 contest.  This should be for who you think should be named Person of the Year because of being "the individual or group of individuals who have had the biggest effect on the year's news", not for who you think Time will choose for the title.

Feel free to make multiple nominations, but please include a brief explanation of why you think each nominee should be considered, especially if I might otherwise think you were making a bad joke.

The Republican House Leadership (DeLay, Blunt, Boehner, Hastert, Reynolds)

Their mishandling of everything that came their way ruined any chance the GOP had of holding onto the House. Probably the biggest factor in the Democrat's victory on Tuesday.

Rahm Emanuel.  His successful strategy of recruting second- and third-tier candidates help make a Democratic wave possible.  The Democrats should be kissing his shoes for all he did for them.

Always possible is something done, like:

Independent/Swing/Moderate/Centrist Voters
Conservative/Moderate Democrats
Democrats (in general)

Or, most nauseatingly:

The Voters

Eh...that's a bit of a stretch for a Person of the Year spot but if he would have somehow won and the GOP kept control of both the House and the Senate then the choice would make sense.

Person of the Year to a senator who didn't do much extra this year besides losing?  POTY is not a consolation prize, or at least it shouldn't be.

I wouldn't say I am the only other person left.  Wink  Like I said, if he would have won and the GOP stayed in control, he would have been the face of a surviving party.

It was just the point of saying that Rick Santorum deserves some recognition for the good he's done for America

He has done great things but so did other incumbents that fell last Tuesday but we can't dedicate the Person/People of the Year slot to them.

The only thing Rick Santorum deserves was the absolute ass kicking he just received.

Nancy Pelosi. She's the first female Speaker in history, and she represents the Democratic resurgence.

One election cycle where you didn't do as good as history suggests you should does not = resurgence
