Will be randomly posting maps here for a while.

WV House results by county:

Mollohan sweeping all but two counties (and carrying Ritchie!) was suprising.
Rahall came close to taking 90% in McDowell.

I hope you don't mind if I post Nebraska-03:

Loup County, which I think is the poorest in the US, voted 57 percent for Kleeb. He carried historically Democratic Saline with 62 percent.

Not at all Smiley

Interesting map, btw.

Just to add a note to the Indiana map; there's quite a noticable split between suburban/commuter counties are rural areas in IN-9. Hill did best in the rural areas.

I wonder if people on here will keep predicting conservative third-party sweeps in hypothetical match-ups between two moderates?

The poorest counties in the US are Buffalo, SD (landslide Kerry), and Shannon, SD (Kerry's best county, beating SF).

Pennsylvania-10

Here

You can see Carney's strength was in Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties (which he carried with a +13,500 margin), while Sherwood was strongest in the northern tier counties (which he carried with a +2,500 margin). The Central Pennsylvania counties went to Carney about +1,500. Obviously, Sherwood's defeat can be blamed on the defection of Republican voters in the northern tier and central counties, which would've provided a large enough margin in past elections to overcome the votes of Luzerne and Lackawanna counties. It should be noted, however, that the parts of those two counties in PA-10 are typically marginally Republican areas and are the only real suburban parts of the district (outside of certain areas of Pike County).

Wyoming County Municipality-Congress

Here

Carney won three municipalities (Clinton, Exeter, and Overfield), all of which are near to the Carney blowout in Lackawanna and Luzerne County. Other than that, nothing much to report other than an overall poor showing for Sherwood in his home county (58-42).

Loup is actually lowest in the nation by per capita income, probably the most reliable indicator - I'd wager a lot of single-income farming households.  Arthur County, Nebraska, is the second poorest...which is, of course, among the most Republican.

Wayne County Municipality-Congress

Here

Very weird results. No one got more than 59% anywhere, which is why I scaled the colors accordingly. Carney's best results where in the areas bordering Lackawanna County and in Honesdale, the county seat and largest town. Not hugely interesting however.

Maps like this happen when

a) Ike Skelton and Pat Danner win in landslides
b) Harold Volkmer and Kenny Hulshof have a close race
c) Jo Ann Emerson is forced to run as an independent because her husband died in the middle of the campaign and the token opponent for the Republican nomination refused to withdraw, forcing Emerson to run as an Independent

That's the US House results map for 1996

Preliminary (one or two results look... odd... one in particular. See if you g) CT Senate results by town:

Note the, relative, rallying of the Democratic vote behind the Democratic nominee (although it was o/c nowhere near strong enough to allow him to win) and the fact that Indies and Republicans could vote in this election.

Wow...thanks everyone.

I particularly like the MO throwback map.

In CT, Chris Murphy really cleaned Johnson's clock.  Very good...

In NC-08 Kissell did great everywhere except in the pivotal Cumberland County where he received the same percentage as teh 2004 nominee (who lost by 12 points district wide).  If a Dem--Kissell or someone else--can put in a similar showing and carry Cumberland or at least come closer there--which I dont think should be all that hard to do--then they'd win quite handily.

Ah, I remember wondering about that.

The 1998 Almanac of American Politics tells the story this way

Quote
You must be logged in to read this quote.

Kline got 22% (1653 votes) in Crawford County, presumably from people who just voted straight ticket. He also got 18% in heavily Republican Wright County.

Emerson won 50/38 in a district that Clinton carried 45/43

The "Alan Schlesinger rule" could be called the "Richard Kline rule".

In other words, if you run as a Republican against an independent Republican and a Democrat, you're assured of at least 10%

My guess is that it's the same way the other way around. In other words, 20% of voters (10% from either side) will always vote for their party no matter what.

House results for North Carolina

With the results from split counties combined by party:

Remembering that Butterfield didn't have any opposition (and any 100% counties were given the >90% coloring).

Overall

Democrats: 53%, 7 seats
Republicans: 47%, 6 seats
