I was wondering the same thing.  The only reference I know of is an English (we usually call that particular language english, not british, but why quibble?) anagram, or acronym, for Quasi non-governmental organization.  (as opposed to a real NGO like NATO.)  But there must be some other use for the term.

That's it Smiley

Ah, poorly-run kind-of-governmental entities with poor oversight. Yes, those are the most dangerous ones of all...
Any good stories about them, Al?

Put it like this... stuff they do nearly always uses more money that was budgeted for...
They are also fairly unaccountable...

Like the new Bernalillo County-City of Albuquerque Detention Facility! It was built three years past its scheduled opening date and had millions in cost overruns. But do you think anyone's going to be punished at the polls for this? *laughs cynically*

Unaccountable: ex., the purchasing for $4 million of a $1 million-valued building by the County; building owned by Democratic hack; purchase conducted by Democratic-controlled County Commission; total lack of oversight and no notification given to the public; see Trujillo, Art, Democratic candidate for Senate in 1996 and for Commissioner of Public Lands in 2002, and owner of the building; Trujillo has a very long history of such deals, which may have resulted in his upset defeat in 2002...

Wha? An anti-federalist conservative?! She'd have gotten crucified by the conservatives over here for replacing elected local governments with unelected Quangos! Ugh...  Lips sealed

Even if she only (or mostly) abolished them in the big conurbations, where the Conservatives couldn't win anyways?

Depends on the conservatives...ones like StatesRights would object in any event, I think, while Opebo would push for removing every mayor-council arrangement in every liberal city in the U.S. and appointing viceroys. Wink

Eh...anti-federalism rarely solves anything (exception: the federal intervention in the District of Columbia in the 1990's - that did improve things quite a bit). So, why haven't Blair and Labour gotten rid of the Quangos then, if they're such a wretched leftover from Thatcherism?

They like to be in control, I guess.
But you'd have to ask Al for details.

They haven't got rid of them because that would increase unemployment figures...
But the powers of elected local (and now regional) government has been increased over the last 7 years.
Lots of towns now have directly elected mayors... (Hartlepool elected the towns football mascot, 'hangus the monkey*... he's more or less independent Labour though)

*Don't ask why he's called that... it'll disturb you...

Labour are much better at devolving power to the regions than the Tories. The Conservatives were all for centralised power in London and the Tory heartlands of the South East. That's why Scotland and Wales hates them, and the North of England for that matter.

I scored Economic Left/Right  5.00 and Social Libertarian/Authortarian  -1.64.  It looks like I scored just about a Milton Friedman. I can live with that!

You and I are very close to each other.  I am a few points farther right economically, and about a point less libertarian socially.
