Florida Sen. Mel Martinez agrees to head Republican National Committee after the party's current chairman, Ken Mehlman, steps down, Republican sources say.

Does this mean he will resign from the senate? I wonder who he'd be replaced with. I hope Bush chooses Katherine Harris. Also, Steele who said he was interested in the job would have been a way better choice.

No.  Chris Dodd once served as DNC Chairman while also serving in the Senate.

I think the RNC is going to need a fulltime chairman though.

Seems like an interesting choice.  I thought they'd tap Steele or Allen in order to keep them involved.  We'll see if the "sources" are accurate.

Mel Martinez will be the new RNC Chair. They are obviously looking to court the Latino vote.

Anyone think of the scenario where Martinez resigns after Crist is governor, and thus appoints Jeb Bush to serve out the term?

Wow. That would be very interesting/amazing.

As for the Martinez selection, I like a surprise every once in awhile but I would have been more pleased with Steele or you know who. Martinez better be ready for excellence.

Now that the Republicans are in the minority, being party chair and a member of the Senate will be much less taxing.  I wouldn't be surprised if he does both.

This is stupid for the RNC, they need a full time leader, especially after getting swept out of office. Steele would have been a great candidate but it looks as if republicans are now hopeless in recruiting blacks. They need to save their latinos.  They voted 69% to 30% dem this year and in 2004 only 55% to 44%. The black vote remained the same.

They may have gone a little overboard with the lets stop all of the illegal Hispanics. Of course Martinez supports as many Cubans being allowed in Florida as will fit, even if they are terrorists like Orlando Bosch.

Mel Martinez. What a repulsive clod.

He's the jerk who complained about populists.

Why should Martinez be RNC chair???

He ran a very mediocre, at best, campaign for his Senate seat. I mean, who the hell even thought of making him RNC chair? It's so random.

And very stupid. This is hardly going to get hispanic votes-- no one cares about the party chairman anyway, plus Martinez is Cuban not Mexican, plus that's not the GOP's problem anyway.

He isnt very popular in FL either. He's in negative approval territory.

Bad pic. You should only pick a senator to head the National Committee if they're in a safe seat. Now when Martinez is up for reelection and claims to be moderate or bipartisan, his opponent can just say "you were chair of the RNC, how is that possible?"
