I dont think what he said was racist. But I do wonder what he thought would be better had Thurmond been president.
It was racist and/or moronic. Take your pick. Wink And Thurmond didn't ever seriously run for President. Count the EVs he ran for. Smiley

Not to mention, Lott's state loves him immensely.  Alexander's state, not so much.

Let's hope for a primary challenge.

True, he actually wasn't even on the ballot in enough states to have a majority in the Electoral College even if he had won every state in which he appeared on the ballot. So yeah, he was hardly a serious candidate for the office itself; he was only trying to cost Truman a majority so that he could exert influence over him due to Truman potentially needing Thurmond's electoral votes.

George Wallace was essentially trying to do the same thing to Nixon in 1968, though at least he was on the ballot everywhere except DC, and so could at least theoretically win the election.

Am I missing something here?  What's the gripe among certain Republicans about Lamar Alexander?

He made it known that he thought Santorum would lose and you don't do that if you are running for a leadership post.

I, too, would love nothing more than to endanger a reliable Republican in a safe seat.  I hear that Bryson guy is available.

Apparently looking at reality is a faux pas in the Senate Republican Caucus.  God forbid anyone pay attention to what is going on outside the beltway.

What?

Ed is a personal friend of mine and one of the smartest men in politics.  He's not challenging the man who he referred to as a "political icon" in our state.

Thanks for sticking with the team, Don.

Then why did he decide to run in 2002?

I hope someone challenges Lamar but I'd be most pleased with Bryant.

I'd support him but I'd prefer someone with a slightly better chance at winning.  Wink  In all seriousness, Lamar would probably win the primary anyway but I just want to see him with opposition.

I don't suppose there's reasoning behind this?

Alexander made it indirectly"clear" that he thought Santorum would lose.

Yes, no Republican should be reality based enough to think that someone who is about to lose by 18 points will lose.

No, it was that he showed no respect towards his colleague who was in a tough race. It wasn't even as if he did this in the final weeks.
