He was the better of two very bad choices.

Does this mean Murtha will be Majority Whip, or was that an entirely separate battle?

I think Jim Clymer of South Carolina will be Majority Whip.

But, but, but Murtha told Chrissy Mathews eye ball to eyeball that he had the votes......

A sensible choice, given Murtha's problems all the way back to abscam.

The correct move by Democrats.  Of course, it doesn't make Pelosi look very good, but she should've never gotten involved in the first place.  Next.

Yeah.

She should have tested the waters first and realised that most Democrats probably don't want anything at all to do with corruption right now, and not generated negative, badly-punctuated headlines like Pelosi wins then loses.

Still, this is really only much of an issue to those who watch this stuff.  Small negative-item stories just don't mean anything when there isn't an election any time soon.

Very true.  The only real impact anything like this could have is in House internal struggles on legilsation in the future, and even that is questionable.

She should have told them both to shut up and sit down and draft John Larson for the position.

I demand a re-vote with completely different candidates.

I dislike Hoyer, but he was the only reasonable choice.

I would have supported Murtha but after all his ethical troubles and other problems I'm pleased Hoyer won now.  He is a respectable liberal Democrat who will probably be acceptable in the role.  I don't think Hoyer and Pelosi's relationship is very warm, however.

In the grand scheme of things that may prove to be a blessing rather than a curse for Democrats.

Major loss for Pelosi. It doesn't hurt her with the public but it definitely effects her control over House Democrats or, more accurately, demonstrates the limit to that control right off the bat.

If Hoyer can get aggressive on Iraq, I'll be fine with him (but I'm not holding my breath). Sad

Sorry anyone who supports the Iraq debacle can not be described as the "reasonable" choice.

The Dems do not want to do anything about Iraq.  If they did then they would loose the only issue that would keep them in office.

Pelosi's first big decision as Speaker designate, and she REALLY dropped the ball.

What an idiotic move on the part of Pelosi, endorsing Murtha for the position of Majority Leader.  She should have stayed OUT of it, completely, and left it to House Democrats to decide.  She has lost a tremendous amount of credibility with this major misstep.

Murtha, although not accepting money from an Arab Shiek, did not exactly turn it down, either.  What a LAME argument on Murtha's part, the money could go to help constituents.  Ya, RIGHT!  Murtha, the old fashioned Democratic ward healer.  He got what he deserved.
