I would like to propose the Senate consider the following as a bill:

A registered voter may not change his or her state of residence more frequently than once in a four month period.

Would a Senator care to introduce this legislation?

Seconded.

Time period is about right, wording is about right, I see no reason this bill shouldn't be passed as is.

I'm not so sure.  On the one hand it is very irritating when forum members change their avatars constently, on the other hand, I'm not sure we should be passing legislation on this.  Is it really a problem that needs to be addressed by the senate?

I think I am inclined to agree with you, besides, what if a member is moving and so they change their registratino but then the move falls through, or they move back, then they are stuck......

I am not so sure about this.

Unless someone moves in real life, they should have no reason to change state.

if they move in real ife, it is highly unlikely it will be for less then four months.

Pople swapping states, changing them for a holiday, and basically not taking them seriously is getting out of hand.

From day one, i've had Iowa and it'll stay, unlss I move to the US and it is a different state then Iowa.

People don't need to change their state, and shouldn't unless it is actually tru that they are in a different locatio. If possible, people should have the state they live in. As I live in a country without an avatar, I have Iowa. If Australia does get one, I'll put Iowa in my signature and stay as an Iowan. i think that's an exception. But otherwise, people should stay in the state they are in for at least 4 months.

It might be a bit hard to enforce four months to the day, so I suggest a minor amendment:

"A registered voted may not change his or her state of residence more then once in a presidential term of four months"

It just makes it easier to enforce. therwise, it's a great idea, and should be supported.

I support this bill.  We can't have people constantly changing their state of residence.

Absolutely not. One of the basic rights we get in this nation is the right to choose where to be represented. Restricting this is absolutely authorative, and wrong. Just becuase it's annoying shouldn't have any relevance, and it is not a valid argument. Boss Tweed is annoying, you don't see me banning him.

It creates a possibility of election rigging.  Say, a bunch of members of a party vote in some contested district and then move back.  Therefore, restricting the frequency of such changes is necessary.

That is true. But instead of having restrictions, I think we should have waiting periods-- say a week. So each member can register in a different state as much as he wants to, but he can't offically be part of it until a week later. So lets say I register for OK one day, it doesn't become official until the end of the week. But during this time, I can change my mind.

I support this bill. Very few people will actually change states twice in 4 months in real life, and even if they do, it's not a big deal for them to just wait until after the 4 month period to actually change their state on the Forum.

The above should be the name of the bill as that's who it's aimed at. Smiley

As there has been no activity on this bill in 10 days and to get some things moving around here. I hereby apply a legislative freeze on this bill for one month. After this time limit has expired the bill shall be reconsidered and either removed from the Senate floor or debating shall again commence upon it.
