McCarthyRockefeller (easily).

A better option would be Reagan vs McCarthy vs Wallace, Reagan actually got the most votes in the Republican primaries.

McCarthy would probably finish third actually, especially if Wallace chose a better running mate.

EDIT: I suspect a map would like this:

This is truly a Hobson's choice.   I sincerely doubt Rocky's  chances to win the GOP nomination after the divorce and re-marrige.  I also cannot see the Dems nominating McCarthy.  He had an undistinguished career in the Senate and was considered a loner.  Interestingly enough, he was considered for VP in 1964 by LBJ.  Wallace is, well, Wallace.

This would be a hard election to handicap as I would foresee a low voter turnout as conservatives in the Midwest and West have no one to vote for.   Rocky would probably win but Wallace would come close on the heels of McCarthy in votes and possibly beating him in the electoral college.

I'm surprised so many people would vote for Rockefeller. Personally (though I'm not American) I would never vote for someone with that surname; that family has too much as it is.

I'd definitely vote for George Wallace, and it's not even close.  He would've been a fantastic President, to boot.

I doubt he would've won though.

Wallace would have won more of the south in this scenario, maybe even Texas.

I'm not in any way, shape, or form a Wallace supporter. But I don't think it's entirely ridiculous for someone to unironically support Wallace today. Looking past the segregation issue, Wallace appealed to working class whites and white ethnics. There just simply isn't anyone like Wallace today in the aspect of being a vehemently socially conservative and populist Democrat.

I do happen to agree. There is a reason that Eugene McCarthy runs well in the South in spite of no southerner being on his ticket. The American South has for seventy years cared about ethics and family values. Nelson Rockefeller saw his presidential aspirations dim when he divorced one woman and quickly married another.

There's no way Wallace doesn't sweep the south in this scenario.

Nelson Rockefeller/Barry Goldwater 278 EVs
George Wallace/ George Smathers 140 EVs
Eugene McCarthy/ Hubert H. Humphrey 120 EVs

Significant numbers of the Southern Democratic party swing over to support Wallace. Republicans make steep gains in traditionally Democratic areas. The Dixiecrats take second place Electorally, but third in the popular vote.
