Honestly, Webb should have beaten the sh**t out of Bush. Bush sent Webb's son off to risk his life in some utterly pointless war. Bush is complete human trash.

^^^^^^^^^^

My respect for Webb shot up a lot.

Respect is earned - not given.

If President Bush had done or said one single thing throughtout this entire Iraq disaster without completely f***ing it up, you might have a point.

As things stand, you don't.

It doesn't matter that you support Bush or not.  However, taking the high road is sometimes better - which Webb should have done and failed to do.  Since you both disagree with Bush then you say it is okay for Webb to stup towards Bush's level (if Webb does what Jfern would have done in that situation).

Respect is a lot better than disrespect, even to someone you can not agree with or tolerate - something both of you need to learn!

Could Webb have handled it better?  Perhaps, but considering the situation, and Bush bringing up his son who is a sitting duck in the Civil War Bush's actions have led to, can't say I blame Webb for his terse response.  He spoke to Bush as a father 1st, and Politican 2nd, and I don't see any real problem with that.

How on Earth do you know that Webb didn't take the high road? Basically, you are assuming that you know the tone of Webb's voice when he answered to Bush that he just wants to see his son come home, when in reality you have no idea how he said it. You also fail to realize that he may just not have wanted to discuss his son being in Iraq for emotional reasons. You are rationalizing Bush's bitchy response by saying "Oh, it was classless of Webb to say he wants his son home" in the first place, when you have no way of knowing that. It's never classless or disrespectful for a parent to wish their child out of harm's way.

Respect is a lot better than disrespect, even to someone you can not agree with or tolerate - something both of you need to learn!

There you go assuming things again. Just who was disrespecting who in this situation? Are you again saying that Webb was the one being disrespectful whe all he said was that he wished his son was home? Your logic is ridiculously inconsistent, and your argument bull.

Btw, I respect your viewpoint, it's just wrong.

It is true what's been said... Neither guy acted in a dignified manner. Although, personally, I would've loved to have seen a brawl.

It is pretty easy to become "awesome" in a Democrat's eyes, even if you support mostly conservative positions.  Just disrespect Bush.  If Hillary wants to win the Dem nomination in 2008, all she has to do is spit in Bush's face.

Too bad Webb dosenn't support mostly conservative positions, so your argument makes no sense.

People who know absolutely nothing of Webb's political ideology like Van here should feel free to remove themselves from the conversation.

Yes, but Webb doesn't owe Bush any more respect than visa versa.

even to someone you can not agree with or tolerate

I would have more respect for Bush if he was an intelligent, well-reasoned person whom I disagreed with. Unfortunately he is not.

So because Bush "started" the war and the other man in question opposes it, he shouldn't ask how his son is doing? I don't understand that. Should the President not visit troops in the hospital because they might not support the war anymore?

Bush asked how Webb's son was doing in the midst of a war whose initiation, like it or not, was Bush's doing.  Webb replied that he'd like to see him come home, which is probably his son's feelings on the matter.  Then Bush gave Webb a completely snappy response and Webb replied in kind.

I don't see how either person is particularly more culpable than the other here.

I can't really fault either of them on this one.  Bush asked Webb how his son was doing, and Webb basically responded with his own desire to see him again.  Thus, he didn't actually answer the question, so Bush was right in that respect.  Then, Webb mistook Bush's response for a flippant change of subject, and got angry with him for the misunderstanding.  Not a very newsworthy incident if you ask me.

I concur. I think the President just misinterpreted Webb, but I can see how he could have.

See, but that's not what he said.  He said "I'd like to get them out of Iraq, Mr. President."  He didn't respond regarding his son, he phrased it as a general policy point.  If he had said something like "I like to see him out of Iraq," that would have been more appropriate.

What is Webb's political ideology anyway?  His favorite President is Ronald Reagan, but all the libs say he is a "progressive" which means he's a socialist, so I don't know what to make of it.  Perhaps you could enlighten me?

Well, Webb isnt really playing politics. It's personal to him not just an election strategy of running against the president and meeting him and then being pals but one of running against his policies and seriously disliking him because he is wrong and it isnt just a game.

The general level of mastery of the English language exhibited by our New Jersey posters (Rin-Chan and fezzy aside) is simply appalling.

Try something before you hit the post button. Read you post out loud and analyze how it sounds to you. Unless you're braindead, you'll realize it just doesn't sound correct.

Okay, so it could have been phrased better so as not to sound like a campaign pitch, but still, the meaning would have been identical.

He probably still hasn't gotten out of campaign mode where every question asked of a candidate gets answered with a campaign plank. Tongue

Webb is the type of guy who, during elementary school, no doubt received the comments on his report card, "Does not work well with others."

Based on watching Webb during the campaign and afterwards, I am pretty sure that at some point during his Senate career, he's going to "lose it" about someone or something.  It will be interesting to see the response then.

Until then, I am enjoying watching him as much as I enjoy watching Coburn.  At least it will make the Senate interesting.

Politics as usual.  Webb should have taken the higher road and just acted cordial.  When your superior tries to have a conversation with you, you show respect, if only to keep the atmosphere friendly.  If Webb is such a robot that talking points slip into his everyday speaking habits, why is he deserving of any new respect from Democrats?  I will like Webb as a Senator when he piles up a liberal voting record.  Right now, I am not impressed, because I wouldn't be impressed if a Republican Senator-elect had done the same thing to Clinton in the 1990s.

Bush deserves no respect for his lies to push his warmongering agenda that uses young men such as Jimmy Webb as cannon fodder. Jim Webb showed Bush respect by not beating the living crap out of him.

This is true, but it's not like Webb had to respond to Bush with a stupid campaign talking point.  Webb is basically using his son for political purposes.

No one is innocent or benign here, and it's certainly not a very shining event for either of them.  More a non-event than anything else, other than two grown men in Washington D.C. being unable to hold a conversation without entering into a pissing match.

Well, Jim Webb is in the right here, seeing as he didn't send the Bush twins to be cannon fodder in some far off war based upon lies.

You're talking about Jim Webb, the same guy who made it a point during his campaign to not allow his son to be used in campaign commercials??? The same guy who refused to mention his son's name on the stump???

The obvious point is you could not be more worng.
