http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/pages/results/states/VA/I/01/map.html

This looks a little odd. It appears most heavily black areas voted AGAINST it.

Anyone know why Albemarle county did btw?

Yup... University of Virginia

The reason most black voted against it is probably because they walked into the booth and pulled the lever for straight Dem.

I don't think "straight Dem" registers votes against that amendment.

Buchanan County election results

Senate: 56/44 Webb
Marriage Amendment: 90/10 Yes
U.S. House: 80/20 Boucher

Not surprising. Many African Americans do take a conservative stance on such issues

No, they voted against the ban, not against gay marriage.

Sussex, Greensville, Brunswick, Portsmouth and Charles City all voted for the ban, as did most counties with a black population over 40% (in some cases very strongly so; over 70% in Southampton).

The only two counties/cities were blacks outnumber whites and which voted against the ban were Richmond and Petersburg.

Odd fact; Charles City was very close. So was neighbouring James City. Which is very white by the standards of this part of Virginia and which voted over 60% for Bush.

Question, since the "circles" are cities, do their votes get county outside the county votes in VA?  (I noticed that as I watched the Allen race on cNN)

I assume those votes are not included in the county totals.

Virginia has independent cities that apparently function as if they were counties.

Old Virginia tradition of independent cities. It dates back to before the Revolutionary War.

It seems like, outside the Deep South, this issue has also lost its appeal with minorities.  Indians and Hispanics didn't go for it in 2006 as much as before either, especially Indians.

It must be devastating to Republicans knowing that all their efforts in shoring up an incumbent by placing a gay marriage ban on the ballot were to naught, and that many of those who voted for the gay marriage ban voted for the Democrat in the Senate race.

No. IIRC the first of these independent cities date to the 1840s or something. The massive increase that now has even tiny places (Clifton Forge anyone?) as indy cities was mostly in the early 20th century.
