From my point of view, French politics before the '70's would not have been much fun... I'm fairly sure that I'd have been a Communist voter almost by default (I would not have voted SFIO and am not a Catholic).
It should also be noted that I don't like Mitterrand and think that his time as President (especially when he had that immense majority in the National Assembly) represents one of the greatest failures in the history of European Socialism.
Despite that, I would still have voted for him over the alternatives...

1965

1st round: Mitterrand (FGDS)
2nd round: Mitterrand (FGDS)

1969

1st round: Duclos (PCF)
2nd round: not sure

1974

1st round: Mitterrand (PS)
2nd round: Mitterrand (PS)

1981

1st round: Mitterrand (PS)
2nd round: Mitterrand (PS)

1988

1st round: Mitterrand (PS)
2nd round: Mitterrand (PS)

1995

1st round: Jospin (PS)
2nd round: Jospin (PS)

2002

1st round: Jospin (PS)
2nd round: Chirac (RPR)

I'd probably have voted for the Socialist candidate (Mitterand / Jospin) almost by default in most recent elections, although back in the 60's I'd probably have been enthusiastically in favour of General de Gaulle - tough, patriotic and the scourge of the far right.

I'm very impressed by what I've seen and heard of Segolene Royal so far this year.

I don't know much about French politics but judging from Wiki I would probably whinge alot; none of the candidates look anything near me. Damn French conservatism.

Either way, giving a guess (getting most of my knowledge, as I say, from wikipedia):
2002: 1st Round: Corinne LePage (Citoyenneté action participation pour le XXIe siècle)
           2nd Round: <no vote>

1995: 1st Round: Edouard Balladur (Gaullist Splinter)
           2nd Round: Ackkk... Jospin (Socialist)

1988: 1st Round: Raymond Barre (UDF)
           2nd Round: <no vote>

1981: 1st Round: Michel Crepeau (Left Radical Party)
           2nd Round: Francois Mitterrand (PS)

1974: 1st Round: Jacques Chaban-Delmas (UDF)
2nd Round: Valery Giscard d'Estaing (RI)

1969: 1st Round: Michel Rochard (PSU)
          2nd Round: Alain Poher (PDM)

1965: 1st Round: Jean Lecanut (Democratic Center)
          2nd Round: Ackkk...

I don't know much about French history so I just skipped around wiki for a few minutes and made a decision.  My logic was, I probably wouldn't allign with a predominantly Catholic Party (Poher) and I wouldn't want to vote for a Stalinist (Duclos) so I went with the next best option.  Defferre might have been too conservative for me and I might have voted Trotskyist.

Yeah, that was obvious Smiley

By this point the SFIO was basically a coalition of centre-leaning notables from the rural south of France, rather than anything that could be thought of as a Socialist or Social Democratic party... o/c despite this fact they tended to use even more extreme Marxist rhetoric than the Communists, for some reason that I've never been able to work out (this gap between rhetoric and policy still exists with the PS o/c).
