Yeah, I know it's too soon and all that but I wonder how many think this is one of the seats the GOP will take back in 2008.

I say yes most due to the fact that the GOP base in this area isn't really that strong. The only two candidates I can see making a decent run district-wide are State Sens. Julie Rosen and David Senjem. Gutknecht is unlikely to run again and as we saw his support was never that strong anyway, he just benefited before 2006 from really weak and underfunded opponents.

I will say Yes.  In 2008, the Minnesota GOP will have to fight an uphill presidential race and have to defend Senator Norm Coleman.  MN-1 is probably off their radar until 2010.

Yes I think so. My friend is on his fundraising staff.

I wish Tim Penny would come back... and run as a Republican Smiley

Penny is my favorite Democrat (I like him better than most Republicans!), bar none.  He is super-ultimate-FF.  I would have happily voted for him over Pawlenty and whoever the DFL candidate was in '02.

I've never understood Tim Penny's appeal apart from the fact he took away votes from Roger Moe.

Depends how centrist Walz can be.  If he votes with the flaming lefties, of course not.  I don't think he'd be that stupid however.

Good news, he got a spot on the Ag Committee, which of course is being chaired by fellow Minnesota Democrat Collin Peterson (a DINO, yeah, but he's good for the committee). That'll help no doubt.

I would imagine Walz will be lower on the list of GOP targets in '08 than a lot of others.

I think the GOP will be putting more focus on the "corruption five," Indiana, upstate New York, the South, and KS-2.  I think GA-8 and GA-12 will be tops on the GOP list of takeovers in 2008.

What's this about?  National Journal coined it, no?  I like how they make it sound like these 5 are "corrupt" when in fact they defeated corrupt politicians.

I've heard them referred to as the "scandal five", Democrats that defeated corrupt incumbent Republicans or taken open seats previously held by a corrupt Republican (Lampson, Space, Carney, McNerney, and Mahoney IIRC).

Yeah, but they were more accurately the 'scandal-defeating five' or something.  It's rather deceptive to tag them with 'scandal'.
