This is still a rumor of some sort.  Drudge is running it, so is MSNBC.  CNN, AP, FOX and Reuters has not said anything.

It hasd been reported that Johnson was admitted to the hospital earlier today with "stroke-like symptoms", but no information has been released by GW Hospital.

This is the best article I can find right now on the subject.

I hope no one makes this political, because it isn't.

Obviously, prayers are to be given to the Johnson family in this type of situation.

Actually, moderator, this would probably be a better fit in US General Discussion; please put it there.

I posted it here because I was reading threads when it popped up across the newswires, apologies...

FOX and AP are now reporting a "possible stroke"

I don't like the networks speculating on the political implications of this.  Not the time.  I didn't like the networks speculating on the Senate balance of power implications in 2001 when Stom Thurmond was hospitalized.  I don't like it now either.  Bad taste.

Reuters now has an article that Johnson has apparently suffered a stroke.

Prayers to all.  Sad to see a young man have a stroke at his age.

Link here.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson, Democrat of South Dakota, had an apparent stroke on Wednesday at his office in Washington and has been hospitalized, NBC News reported.

The condition of the 59-year-old Johnson was unknown, the network said.

Rep. Mike Castle of Delaware suffered a stroke a few months ago, but was evidently well enough to go and win re-election in November.  The only reason I say this is that I hope Sen. Johnson's stroke is gentle enough not to affect him too badly, as Castle's was.

Given that it was said he was suffering under "stroke-like symptoms", it sounds like it may have not been a major one, but I still hope he's okay.

I'm sorry that Johnson had a stroke and I hope it is very mild and he fully recovers quickly.  That said I don't see a problem with the speculation on what could happen.  It is clearly more newsworthy than a year of stories about one murdered blonde from Alabama in Aruba...

I wish him the best, but he is a Senator, so it is somewhat political - the control of the Senate could be at stake.

Let's be clear, a person can have a stroke and not turn into broccoli.  This looks minor and let's wish Senator Johnson the best.

He might also take it as a sign that perhaps he should start living a little healthier and put off anything further for a while, as a result.  At least, hopefully he does.

Ideal situation:

Senator Johnson is okay and fully recovers but decides the senate is too much stress for him and resigns (everybody wins)

My best wishes go out to Senator Johnson.  I hate seeing a person suffer, no matter which party.  I wish him a speedy recovery, and hope that he can fulfill his duties as Senator.

But I must note, that if he were to be incapacitated, the Repubican Governor, would most likely appoint a Republican--making a 50-50 Senate.

Once again, I hope this situation does not arrise, and please pray for Senator Johnson and his family.

our hopes and prayers march with him.

What a way to lose the senate if he were (god forbid) to die, or step down...

Theres nothing to stop him staying on for years, even if he is incapacitated somewhat

From Slate: "In 1969, two years into his fourth term, South Dakota Sen. Karl E. Mundt, a Republican, suffered a stroke and was unable to continue voting. He offered to resign, but only on the condition that South Dakota's governor appoint Mundt's wife to fill the vacancy. The governor refused, and Mundt retained the Senate seat, even while missing three full years of votes. He even remained on three committees until 1972, when the Senate Republican Conference stripped him of these assignments. Similarly, in the 1940s, Sen. Carter Glass of Virginia missed two years' worth of votes due to illness—he was 87 and in failing health—but refused to retire even as newspapers from across his state pressured him to step aside."

Some of the stuff on the right-wing forums is horrible 'This is God's way of letting America know he wants us to have a Republican Senate' Angry

Absolutely horrible and against all good morals. People like that give a bad name to the Republican Party, Christianity, America, and people in general.

I'm curious if God is also going to cause 16-some Democratic deaths in the House, since he presumably would also want America to have a Republican House.

But perhaps that's beyond his powers, as so many people seem to allege who attribute absolutely everything that happens in the universe to God.

Look... unless we hear otherwise, it's best not to treat this as if Johnson is near death, incapacitated or anything like that.

It's just... wrong... really.

As well as Mike Castle, I'd also like to point that Harry Reid also suffered a stroke last year.  Sometimes these things can be fairly minor, and I sincerely hope for Tim Johnson's sake that it'll be one of them.
