If the situation is bad and Senator Johnson cannot carry out his duties, who would Rounds appoint?  I don't mean Republican or Democrat I mean a specific person.

Personally I know nothing about ND politicians

It's South Dakota.

And I don't know much either.

That was a typo but shows how little I know about the matter

He should appoint Stephanie Herseth, as she is a moderate Democrat, and a Democrat was elected to that seat originally and recieved a mandate.

It wasn't exactly a mandate it was a ridicuously close election

[Threadjack alert]

So I take it that Bush didn't "exactly" have a mandate during his first term?  He won Florida's EVs by almost the same number of votes that Johnson won re-election by in 2002.

Well still, 500 more south dakota voters wanted tim johnson so technically he had a mandate.

A mandate is at least over 50% of the vote, if I remember my terminology correctly. Johnson did not receive 50% of the vote in 2002.

Yes of course since N and S are on the opposite ends of the keyboard.

It's alright DWDL, nobody can tell the difference between SD and ND.

Yes, Bush's first election was not a mandate

Not the way the world works. I remember a moderate Pennsylvania Republican being replaced by Democrat Harris Wofford after his heliocopter crashed.

The day a democrat appoints a similar republican to a seat a republican won...that will justify the act you hoped for above.

Until then, what goes around, comes around.

Besides this is all academic, hopefully Senator Johnson will be able to finish out his term. God willing.

Obviously, it should be George McGovern. lol Tongue

Seriously, I wouldn't mind Herseth... She'd be the hottest U.S. Senator, that's for damn sure.

Hey, why not (well apart from the whole Governer is Republican thing)? I mean they did revive the fossil of Walter Mondale to compete in Minnesota after the Wellstone crash. Plus, I always liked Mcgovern.

But yeah. Tongue

Per SD law there would be a special election within 80-90 days anyway.

My best guess is Daschle to hold the seat and Herseth runs in the election.  But this is all highly speculative now anyway.

Rounds is the only Republican in the state who could beat Herseth and it's doubtful that he'd run.

Thank you Nostradumbass.

Anyways. Herseth has to be taken out of the picture...perhaps you put Daschle in there hoping he blocks her from moving up...then you take Daschle out in the general...easier said than done...(assuming ole tom wants to run)

Well Whatever, and Bush or no one better campaign for the GOP Nominee in the special erection because it would be improper.

Snicker Snicker...but we'll be sure Bill Clinton will be there.

In all seriousness...are you calling for one party not to campaign but not the other?

I agree; erections are a very personal thing that should not be part of a campaign.

Dude, the media will do anything to defeat the Democrat, like they did with Wellstone, using his funeral against the Democrats.

I swear I'm not gay or bi, but if Herseth were appointed, South Dakota would officially have the most attractive Senate duo in the nation.

Rounds would appoint some random Republican. Daschle would run in the special election and win. He only lost last time because of the highly charged '04 national climate.
