Rounds would appoint some random Republican. Daschle would run in the special election and win. He only lost last time because of the highly charged '04 national climate.

Daschle is finished pretty much finished in South Dakota. I could see him running and the only reason he would win is because the voters would feel it is right for a Dem to replace a Dem. Otherwise, I highly doubt a majority of people care about him anymore.

I warn people against being so sure that a Republican would be appointed/win the special.

Alright, I did a little reading here just to educate the masses.

If Johnson were to resign or die, Governor Rounds would appoint a person for the vacancy who would serve until the state's next general election, which is  November of 2008.  Since this is the normal time the seat would be up, that would be the election for the seat for the next 6 years.

Whoever's reading 80-90 days into this thing doesn't know the difference between a Congressional vacancy and a Senatorial vacancy.

Dude, the media will do anything to defeat the Democrat, like they did with Wellstone, using his funeral against the Democrats.

Yes, how dare people get upset that a funeral was turned into an election rally!

If the situation is bad and Senator Johnson cannot carry out his duties, who would Rounds appoint?  I don't mean Republican or Democrat I mean a specific person.

Personally I know nothing about ND politicians

Bill Janklow is out.  Rounds might well be under pressure to appoint himself. But I would look for him to appoint some Pentecostal or fundamentalist Baptist radio preacher.  Either that, or an Opus Dei devotee.
Cause it's all about the fetus...

He should appoint Stephanie Herseth, as she is a moderate Democrat, and a Democrat was elected to that seat originally and recieved a mandate.

It wasn't exactly a mandate it was a ridicuously close election
Well still, 500 more south dakota voters wanted tim johnson so technically he had a mandate.

A mandate is at least over 50% of the vote, if I remember my terminology correctly. Johnson did not receive 50% of the vote in 2002.

Reagan's re-election was a mandate (carrying 49 out of 50 states with over 58% of the PV).  No one else really has had a mandate ever since.
