People can have real changes of heart.

But Winston was at one point an anarcho-capitalist. To suddenly dramatically shift with no explanation other than making an ignorant statement like "free markets don't work" is disappointing.

That's the sort of statement to be expected of someone who just picked up that belief from their parents or peers and never questioned it. I would excuse it in that case, but for someone as well-read as Winston, who I know has his own well-thought-out beliefs, I would expect better.
