Chet Edwards should join, if he gets lonely enough one day

With the Blue Dogs at 44 (and probably counting) I would be very surprised if there wasn't a dramatic rightward shift from the Democrats.  I think this is a good thing for both the Democratic Party and some of Bush's leftier positions.  Maybe this Congress wil actually get some things done Smiley

Some of them such as Israel and Gillebrand as well as a few others hardly classify as conservative Democrats

Or Loretta Sanchez. She may be a lot more conservative than her liberal sister Linda, but she's certainly no DINO.

Yes, the Blue Dogs often seem odd. Gillibrand is definitely not even moderate, let alone a Blue Dog.

I think people like Gillibrand, recently elected, are going to want to join the Blue Dogs obviously so they can project a moderate, populist image.  They are frightened of being called liberals in swing districts.

I agree.  His politics are very similar to mine and I'm no Blue Dog.  DLC- maybe, but I'm even towards the left end of that Caucus.

The Blue Dogs are very quickly becoming (if they haven't already) just another DLC-style meaningless label that some Democratic candidates adopt in order to appeal better to their constituents.  In most parts of the South, it's political suicide not to be a member of it.  It doesn't really serve much else of a function.

Wasn't there a yellow dog something or other for Democrats at one time?  Can anyone enlighten me?

A yellow dog Democrat was a Southerner (before 1960s) who would vote for a yellow dog if that was who the Democratic candidate was. Blue dog refers to how these people feel like the post-Civil Rights Democratic party has strangled them.
