ELCA is down as mainline and LCMS (Lutheran Church/Missouri Synod) as evangelical. Go figure.

Apparently the ELCA (actually BRTD's church) despite the name, is way more liberal than the LCMS.

nclib is correct. There's two reasons for the name:

1-The word "Evangelical" actually comes from a time in Europe when "evangelical" was just a synonym for "Protestant".
2-The church was actually formed as a merger of two others, the Evangelical Lutheran Church and Lutheran Church of America. The name was merged too, even though the old LCA was never "evangelical".

Rock County stats are interesting though. That's one of the 8 counties that voted for Kennedy an has a reputation as a religious right stronghold. Of course even ELCA churches in rural areas can be conservative.

As for the other Kennedy counties.

Pipestone (Kennedy's best county): ELCA plurality. Christian Reformed Church in North America is second. LCMS is third. Catholics are fourth.

Redwood: Catholic plurality, ELCA second, WELS third, United Methodists fourth.

Carver, Wright, and Sherburne are all Catholic pluralities (in the EvanPro/MLPro/Catholic/Other/Jewish/Muslim split)

Cass and Otter Tail: ELCA plurality

And..

Catholic counties: Klobuchar 22, Kennedy 3
Evangelical counties: Klobuchar 3, Kennedy 2
Mainline counties: Klobuchar 54, Kennedy 3

Random interesting note: There has never been a Lutheran President in American history.

I'll note that I'd pick the ELCA, if they really had any churches around here. Then again, I really haven't went to any church in awhile.

Traverse county suprises me. That's the red county on the western border. It tends to be Democratic traditionally and even is now on the state level (despite the 2000 and 2004 Presidential results)

The other two evangelical plurality counties, McLeod and Sibley, both are traditionally very Republican, which just underscores Klobuchar's landslide in that she won them. Sibley was one of Minnesota's 4 counties to vote for Goldwater, and Klobuchar won 2 of them.

Here's Missouri

And since it's my state, here's a denominational map:

UCC = United Church of Christ (Gasconade County)
CC/CoC = Independent Christian Churches/Churches of Christ (Shelby County)

2006 Senate race by group
Evangelical: 79 Talent, 22 McCaskill
Mainline: 5 Talent, 0 McCaskill
Catholic: 6 Talent, 3 McCaskill

and by denominational plurality
SBC: 72 Talent, 18 Claire
Catholic: 11 Talent, 7 McCaskill
Rest: 4 Talent, 0 McCaskill

Then again, I could have noted which counties had SBC majorities

Sorry to the non-religious people, you all won't get counted here. Especially due to the flaws in religious censuses.

You do realize that non-religious people are the plurality in four states don't you?  In Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and Wyoming the largest religious denomination is no religion.

Idaho?

While collected by the census such maps for Scotland are not published as they are deemed political 'insensitive'

Georgia:

157 of 159 counties have Southern Baptist Majorities or pluralities.

The largest group in Lumpkin County is the Old Time Missionary Baptists.

The largest group in Pickens County is the Jasper Baptist and Pleasant Valley Baptist Associations.

The map would probably look a lot different if the historically African-American churches got counted.

Aye. And Wyoming. Pioneer spirit, I guess. "No religion" is a very close second in Montana, too, behind Catholics.

Out of the people who did pick a region, Idaho splits like this

Catholics and Evangelical Protestants in the North, and Blaine County.

LDS everywhere else.

The top Evangelical Protestant Group is the Assemblies of God, followed by the SBC, Church of the Nazarene, and the LCMS.

Whenever I get around to making Indiana, Ohio, or Pennsylvania, I should note the Amish populations.

The Old Order Amish have a plurality in Lagrange County, IN and Holmes County, OH.

The Mennonite Church USA has a plurality in Harvey County, KS and Marion County, KS

Marion County is also home to Tabor College, operated by the Mennonite Brethren, which is a Russian Mennonite Church.

The Mennonite Church USA operates Bethel and Hesston Colleges in Harvey County.

Kansas (by type of Church):

and by denominational plurality:

Am Baptist = American Baptist Churches USA (formerly the Northern Baptist Convention)
DoC = Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
CC/CoC = Independent Christian Churches/Churches of Christ
MCUSA = Mennonite Church USA
CGC/M = Church of God in Christ, Mennonite

Kansas Gubernatorial Election, split by the general groups

Mainline: 43 Sebelius, 25 Barnett
Evangelical: 9 Sebelius, 12 Barnett
Catholic: 12 Sebelius, 4 Barnett

Granted, the Mennonite Church USA and other Mennonite groups aren't known for voting.

Are you counting the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod as mainline or evangelical?

For the record, it's evangelical. It's far more conservative than the LCMS, and has nothing to do with ELCA at all.

No religion? or No Organized Religion?

Non-religious.

Those without religion are estimated at 25% in Washington, and growing.  Roman Catholics are 20%.  The next is Lutheran, at 6% (generalised Protestants are at 29%, but that will probably fall below non-religious soon too).

Only 63% of Washingtonians identify as Christian, easily the lowest in the country that I can find.  So far, it's the only state I've found that is below 70%.

And then there's the consideration that a lot of those Christians never go to church and have no idea what their denomination stands for.  In reality, I'd wager that most people in Washington are "non-religious" in the sense that they don't practise their denomination of choice to any real extent.

I personally know very few religious people.  I'd say the vast majority of people at my school do not attend church even occasionally.

Do you know if there's any county that is majority non-religious?

The site lists 12 Minnesota counties as having more adherents than people living in the county. I imagine this is probably due to people belonging to multiple churches.

4 of those, including the top 2, voted for Kerry.

North Carolina: 91/100 counties have an Evangelical plurality.

The other nine (which have a Mainline plurality) are: Alamance, Dare, Davidson, Hyde, Moore, Orange, Pamlico, Perquimans, and Rowan.

Interestingly, Bush won the mainline counties 8-1, while he won the evangelical counties 72-19.

Even in the 2004 Senate race, Bowles only won two out of the nine Mainline counties.
