Do you think that CA Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) may have any intention on running for Senate against Barbara Boxer (D) in 2010, when his term expires? He has been a quite popular governor with bipartisan support and a moderate voting record. If so, who would win,

Senator Barbara Boxer (D)                  [  ]
Governor Arnold Scwarzenegger (R)   [  ]

Boxer, easily. Partisanship is always far, far more important in Senate elections than Gubernatorial ones, and it's not like Boxer is unpopular.

Okay, how about if Boxer were to retire. Who would win?

He hasn't been a popular governor, he's been a good campaigner. His approval ratings were horribly low until he started getting into campaign mode and Democrats chose a horrible oponent for him. Boxer isn't a pushover, no way she'd lose to Schwarzaneggar.

No shot.  As Jacob mentioned, Arnold is still unpopular in California and only won because Angelides blew.

Pelosi would crush him.  Would she go for this though?  It seems to me that this would weaken Democratic efforts in the House.  I don't think she would run for Senate unless it was clear who would be holding the majority in the House.  Going into an election and not knowing who will be leading your party afterward could be difficult.

Nancy Pelosi will be the most powerful person in the House in 2007, while she would be one of the least powerful people in the Senate if she ran for that office.  There's no chance I see of that happening.

If Boxer runs for re-election:

CALIFORNIA SENATE
Boxer (D) 54%
Schwarzenegger (R) 43%

If she does not:

CALIFORNIA SENATE
Sanchez (D) 53%
Schwarzenegger (R) 45%

Wrong - Schwarzenegger is not quite popular, and he does not have a voting record at all.

From January 2011, Schwarzenegger's political career will effectively be over.  I don't mean that in a mean-spirited way; logically speaking, he can simply go no further.

Schwarzenegger's problem if he runs for Senate is that the media will be unable to destroy his opponent the way they destroyed Angelides.

Maybe he could get into the House

Schwarzenegger doesn't have that sort of patience.

I have a very hard time seeing Schwarzenegger in the senate. He seems much more the executive type than the legislative/deliberative type. He would probably just end up bored and confused.

Also, I doubt any Republican could get elected to the senate in California, much as I doubt any Democrat could get elected to the senate from Texas.

Lincoln Chafee got elected in Rhode Island.

Lincoln Chafee got elected in Rhode Island.

Only because he was the son of a very popular long term former Senator. No other Republican, even one as liberal as Chafee, would've been able to.

So, who'd win in a 2012 matchup, Joe Montana as a Democrat or Arnold?

Granted, Montana hasn't really disclosed any overt political views.

If we end up with a Boxer-Schwarzenegger matchup in 2010 I have little doubt Babs would prevail. She beat a moderate Republican by 20 in a GOP-friendly year and when Arnold actually was popular.

If Boxer decides to retire, Loretta Sanchez may run and she too would likely beat Arnold. It is common knowledge that governorships are less ideological and partisan than the Senate.

Loretta is a bit on the conservative side for my tastes, being to the right of Feinstein on ProgressivePunch, but she's not horrible. Her sister Linda is more liberal than Boxer.

Loretta Sanchez is all right, I guess.  She was apparently pretty at one time, but age has taken a toll on her beauty.

As for her fat sister Linda, we need to do all we can to stop her from getting a Senate seat.  She is grotesque.

How misogynistic.

Anyhow, I think Loretta Sanchez is clearly ambitious for the Senate and would easily beat Schwarzenegger.  Personally, I think it would require exceptional circumstances for Schwarzenegger to defeat any decent Democratic candidate running for the Senate.  Boxer and Sanchez would both beat him fairly solidly.
