This just popped into my head.

Well?  Does anybody know if it's happened?  If not, do you think it's likely to happen?

I'd say the Governorship of California is an important office. Or what else did you have in mind?

Martin Van Buren had a Dutch accent (he grew up speaking Dutch) from every account I've ever heard as English was his second language. Also I believe some of the early presidents may have had English accents, but don't quote me on that one.

Well, it's still a pretty good question Joe.

John Peter Altgeld, Governor of Illinois (born in Germany)

Carl Schurz, Senator from Missouri and Secretary of the Interior (actually was part of the 1848 Revolution in Prussia)

Tom Lantos (CA-12, for the last 25 years, born in Hungary)

Those were just off the top of my head.

What about Albert Gallatan or C. Douglas Dillon? (Ok, Dillon was just Treasury Secretary)

I didn't know that.  I've never heard him speak, to my knowledge.

I've read that somewhere too.  Apparently the American accent as we know it didn't really develop until the Irish and Eastern Europeans starting migrating en masse.

Well, there's George W. Bush.

...that is a foreign accent, right?

...English wasn't his first language, right...?

Sure you have.

He says "Excellent". And is plotting to over-throw the Galactic Republic.

Lantos put some pressure on a nursing home that was owned by a Hungarian social group to get them to unionize; it was my union at the time.  He could do it because he was of Hungarian decent.

I heard him speak after that; it is not a particularly thick accent.

I am probablly wrong. But didn`t JFK have a funny accent?

nah the kennedys just tawk in a vewry nayzal saundin bahwstin acksent

btw I know FDR didn't have a foreign accent, but his accent doesn't sound like any American accent I've ever heard:-/

Plus I'd imagine there's been a congressman or mayor from south Florida with a Cuban accent at some point.
