I don't really have any political heroes, given that the character one needs to possess in order to become successful in politics automatically disqualifies pretty well everyone from possessing the qualities needed to be a hero.

Dean particularly for his personality.  I hate his politics - but I love the enthusiasm.

'Heroes' among american politicians?  They're all just pigs at the trough, serving the masters.  The only one I can think of who consciously made a major sacrifice for what he thought was 'right' was, oddly enough, Lyndon Baines Johnson.

My personal 'heroes'.. no heros exactly, but people I admire.. right now Michel Foucault..

Wow. Opebo has just put himself above the forum. (If you ignore that first paragraph)

As for me, I've already mentioned Butler so I might aswell mention Michael Davitt, Daniel O'Connell and the Burmese protesters.

I admire Paul Wellstone as a fighter for the disadvantaged.

I admire Arne Carlson as being a uniter and a pretty damn good politician, for a (former) Republican.

Otherwise, nobody clearly stands out.

Teddy Roosevelt (bellicose leader who helped America rise to global primacy)
Henry Wallace (brave man)
Ralph Yarborough (a fighter for the little man)
Harry Truman (The vox populi in the White House. Kudos on his support of Israel, too)
Wayne Morse (Voted against the dubious Gulf of Tonkin Resolution)
Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton round out the list.

Hubert H. Humphrey - The Father of Modern Liberalisim. His Vietnam position notwithstanding, Humphrey was a class act who cared about people which is more than most politicians can say today.

Franklin D. Roosevelt - Overcame crippling polio and won four terms. Had to combat the Great Depression and the Axis Powers. His ideals are also what many Democrats share today.

Morris K. Udall - Remained funny to the end. Few modern politicians could boast that they could be standup comedians. Udall was also a self-aware, folksy man. "I'm a one-eyed Mormon Democrat from Coservative Arizona, and you can't have a higher handicap than that".

William Jennings Bryan - Although Bryan's religious views aren't near to my heart, his devotion to the working man is. Bryan's life was consumed by his dogged defense of the little guy, and he made the Democrats an alternative to the Republicans, in a time when they basically were mirror images of each other.

Teddy Roosevelt - He made the Presidency a bully pulpit. TR was a swashbuckling, heroic man who suffered occassionally from delusions of grandeur. TR did everything his way, and if nothing else, that makes him great.

Henry Clay - Clay was regarded by most puritans as a dissolute gambler. He loved cards, women, and pleasures. However, he was also devoted to internal improvements, and a skilled party leader. Clay saw his ambitions dashed and dealt with much heartache at the end of his life, and still worked to Compromise until the end.

James K. Polk - No other President, Democrat or Republican, delivered on every campaign pledge they made. Polk made four promises in his campaign and delivered on all of them. The workaholic in me also loves his devotion to long, grinding hours that he put in for the four years of his Presidency.

Very original. Cynicism is the enemy of good.

Cynicism is a way of being negative; it just so happens to be that those who are cynical also tend to care about things that contain a lot of negativity, so they turn out to be right more often than not.
